I'm so in shock right now! Just got off the phone with Progress Energy after getting a phone call that we had until today to pay our account (I thought that was weird, since we have ours drafted each month) and found out that someone used MY name, SS# and home phone # to open an account with PE in another town/county!:shock: The man I spoke to at Progress Energy was very helpful and very, very nice. Thank God for that!

Gotta run... I've got a whole list of stuff that I have to go through now since my SS# has been used fraudulently. Ack, I think I'm gonna vomit. :ack:

I FEEL SO SORRY FOR YOU!!!!! this happened to my DH 3 years ago and we are still dealing with it! We have accounts in Las Vegas, Atlanta and we called all 3 credit reporting agencies and put a fraud alert on his SS# Things still went thru! We are in the process of FINALLY trying to get everything back in order!!!!! If i were you i would pull my credit reports every week for about 1 month then pull them about 2 times a month. Its aggravating but thats what we have done bc a lot of times the person that got the info will sit on it for about 6 months and sell it to someone else if your credit is very good! THats what we THINK happened to us. His poor credit dropped like 100pts!!! UGH i hate it for you!!!!!!

I am so sorry this happened to you. Good Luck with everything.

We were offered identity theft protection from our insurance company that we have our house and cars through...do you have that? If so, are they helping you? It would be nice to know what all they do for what we pay for.

So sorry you have to go through this crap. What the heck is the matter with people? Hope you can clear things up before anything else happens. Did they give you the address of where the electricity was going? Did you contact the police?

There was a story on WRAL last night about an elderly lady that was victim of a phone scam. After awhile the perpetrators actually had her phone # changed so her family couldn't contact her to keep up with what she was doing! Didn't see all of it, don't know how much $$ they got. Mean people just suck!!

I'm so sorry to hear that! We'll definitely keep your family in our prayers. You are in good company, as millions of folks have their identity stolen each year. I'm so glad you caught it when you did before any more damage was done. Keep us updated on your progress.

Yep, I have a physical address and a PO Box address for the fraudulent account. I've placed a fraud alert with the credit companies and have ordered a credit report. I've contacted the Sheriff's office and will go there to file a report in a little while.

When I put the physical address in the USPS website, I get this message
I guess that explains the reason for the PO Box.
I'm going to call the post office where that box is and ask if they have a PO Box registered in my name and if so, if it is active.

I'm very anxious to get that credit report. It said for security reasons I could not view it online, after asking if we tried to open a mortgage account in '05 (which we did not ) so I'll be getting something in the mail. I have to tell ya, I'm getting a little skeered by all this!

How does Progress Energy have an account for a house that does not exist if what USPS site says is correct?

The house probably exists, its just that the USPS cannot deliver the mail there as it may be too rural so they need a PO box to pick their own mail up. There are alot of houses in NC that are not deliverable by the Post Office. You need a Police Man waiting at the Post Office to nab the person who picks up the mail at that box. Sorry you are going thru this crap. We are all vunerable these days. :(

I would not wait, go to your bank and explain and they can pull it then and there.. and let you know what is showing up today!

Getting in touch with them ^ is next on my list.

I called the post office and found out that the p.o. box IS registered in my name and it IS active. Since that's the case, I've also filed a complaint with the United States Postal Inspection Service. Also, a Deputy just left my house after taking the info to file a report.

Don't mess with me crooks, I'm ready to FIGHT! :boxing:

I believe then, the crooks have performed a FEDERAL offense, by messing with the PO...So sorry this happened to you, that is horrible. It doesn't sound good, I hope you find out everything you need to quickly. I agree, you should go right to your bank if you haven't already and get all info you can asap! Get your credit report NOW!

Wow, how ironic! And I just happen to be a Republican. I'll have to see if I can squeeze that in somehow. DS has open house/band practice at the high school tonight so I don't know if I'll be able to make it. Will you take notes for me? :)

    Ready,

Sorry to hear of your woes....
Get a police or sheriff's report and have copies available so when you get these fraudulent bills, etc, you'll have something to show them. Alert the credit bureaus.

    Good Luck...
