Does anyone have this or have experience with the AHS (American Home Shield) Home Warranty service company? We got something in the mail and sounds pretty decent for the cost - just wondering if anyone here has actually used them or not.

When we purchased the house we also purchased a home warranty from them. We kept it for about three years. I think we actually had them come out 4 or 5 times. They replaced our water heater, fixed the heat pump/air conditioning and built-in microwave. All things that were covered in the service and we just had to pay the $25 service charge when they came out. There were other things that we had to pay for that were not covered, for example the power line under my neighbors driveway was cut (most likely by the people installing cable lines) and we had about 50% power coming to our house. We thought something shorted out our system and didn't know it was a Progress Energy problem. So that part kind of stinks to pay $25 for something that's not covered.

If your house is older it's definitely a good idea, because you can get them to replace the really expensive things that start to break.

I currently have them and it has saved me many times including this past summer when the a/c went out. Service call fee is $55.00 per item, but the parts and service for the a/c was over $500.

So do they come out and check things when you sign up? Our heat has been acting up, but still works - but its got me worried, so had thought about getting this set-up in case we need it in the near future.

Every now and again, we would receive these in the mail and I'd toss them. But like you, I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to check things out about this company, taking note that we might need to replace one of our units in the next year or two and $2400 is just not in the plans when you have two in college. Do you have a phone number I could call?

No they don't come out prior to signing on with them. I guess the fee for the service calls went up to $55. But they've definitely saved us when we've needed them.

We also got the warranty as part of our closing on our house 2 and a half years ago. Turns out that our A/C was problematic before we got here so the homeowners were trying to cover their butts. The warranty company sent several different companies out multiple times. After 4 visits with no permanent fix, we started pleading with them to just replace the thing but they refused. We went through about 10 visits before we finally got a repairman who called the warranty company and told them that they needed to replace the blasted thing. I called the warranty company and griped at them for making us pay for people to come out and check the unit out over and over again when I had told them months before that it needed to be replaced. They finally begrudgingly refunded us some of our visit fees. We still ended up paying more than $1000 to have our unit replaced because the warranty did not cover disposal or some such nonsense.

But all in all, it still saved us about $2000 that we would have spent on a new unit on our own. And they did come out and fix some other minor things that cropped up. I still have the warranty in place, for now. Just make sure if you ever have to deal with them that you take good notes and always write down the name of the person you talk to. Keep all your receipts from repairmen too.
