We need your help. U.S. Animal Protection has been working with the Johnston County Attorney and the Animal Shelter to get improvements made. While we've heard some contradictory stuff on the state of the shelter, we have found everyone to be very willing to work towards the changes wanted by local citizens and animal activists. I'm hoping that local residents and people in the area will call the attorney (Mark Payne 919-989-5719) and the shelter contact (Ernie Wilkerson 919-989-5119) to ask them to move towards lethal injection and mandatory spay-neuter laws when they make their recommendations to the county commissioners. They are making great strides but knowing that these are things the community wants will be a really helpful impetus in getting these changes made. Please call Mark and Ernie and let them know what you want. And please send me an email or call me (888-710-4184) and let us know that you called. Thanks for your help!! Maybe they can get PETA to help out .... they seem to have experience .. this also sounds very similar to the situation posted a while back about the "gassed" shelter dogs being found dumped ..... maybe they are related? www.roanoke-chowannewsherald.com/articles/2005/06/16/news/anews1.txt PETA possibly involved with dead dogs By Cal Bryant AHOSKIE - A month-long investigation into animal cruelty has resulted in a pair of arrests, individuals possibly linked with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). On Wednesday, Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of 504 Tree Top Street, Virginia Beach, Va. and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of 1602 Claremont Ave., Norfolk, Va. were each charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts each of illegal disposal of dead animals. Both were transported to the Hertford County jail, each under a $35,500 secured bond. Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said Cook and Hinkle posted bond prior to incarceration. "We've been investigating animal cruelty and illegal disposal of dead animals within our city for the last four weeks," Fitzhugh said. "Our investigators determined that these incidents were occurring every Wednesday for approximately one month." http://home.hamptonroads.com/storie...7943&ran=155298 Two on PETA staff charged with cruelty to animals By DARREN FREEMAN AND SETH SEYMOUR, The Virginian-Pilot © June 17, 2005 Last updated: 1:39 AM Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were arrested on animal cruelty charges in Ahoskie, N.C., after investigators saw dead dogs being thrown into a grocery store garbage container Wednesday, according to the Ahoskie Police Department. Ahoskie police conducting surveillance as part of a monthlong investigation reported finding 18 dead dogs in the container and 13 animal carcasses in a van registered to PETA and seized by authorities. The cats and dogs were taken Wednesday from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said. Animals had been collected every Wednesday for four weeks, and carcasses had been found dumped in Ahoskie every Wednesday for about a month, Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said. Two veterinarians said they were told that PETA would try to find homes for animals taken from their practices.
