After they have puppies, they lose their fur. And I mean they LOSE it... almost all of it! Here's proof (these pics and the bag full of fur that I have combed off of her!)

In January, when the puppies were about 5 weeks old.

A couple of weeks ago (no, she wasn't growling.)

Today... look at that pathetic tail. My DH started calling her a German Shedder, lol! The vet said she would grow it all back after her hormones settle back down.

I had her spayed last Monday, so hopefully we will NEVER go through shedding like this again!

It's true though! Ready, did you not lose tons of hair after your kids were born? I thought I was going bald!  Luckily I have thick hair, but it was embarassing how much was falling out!

Yeah, I remember my hair falling out like crazy after my babies were born. When I asked the vet about the dog's fur, I asked her if it was normal, like it is for women, and she said it is the same thing -- hormonal imbalance.

The poor things! We got a cat last year after she'd had a litter of kittens(she's fixed now!) and she was the most pitiful thing you've ever seen. I guess motherhood takes it out of you!

Woohoo, got an appointment with the traveling van to get Gracie spayed on April 20th. They also offer the chip for $25. Anyone done this and is it worth it? Honestly, i don't know much about microchipping the dog and how it all works.

Find out what type of chip, I got one at petsmart and the shelter's scanner did not identify that type of chip. So it does not do any good. Does J. County shelter even scan?

I still think it is a good idea just in case the dog is lost, the finder can take him/her to the vet to see if there is a chip. People just have to remember to keep their file up to date, it is so sad to find a chip, get all excited, call the 800 number and the name and address they give us is in some other state, or all the numbers are disconnected.... doesn't do you any good.

I remember a sign saying that they do.

Also I would think that most vets would also check them, since they sell them. We had one inserted in the Beagle because if he ever gets loose he just follows his nose where ever it takes him. We had them do it while he was under for his nut removal operation.

Ok, forgive me, i haven't researched it, but what they do is put a computer chip in the animal, then if they are found by someone else, there is a 800 number they can call to find who the animal belongs to? Is that how it works? Wish they could put a GPS system in that chip in case no one finds the animal.

    Ditto.

$25 is a reduced rate and the needle is HUGE. Good idea to get it done while she is already knocked out!

There was a big to-do about Banfield (who employs the vets at all the Petsmarts) selling their own proprietary scanning chips and code - NOT COMPATABLE with existing market scanners. Because animals could not be identified unless the vets/animal shelters/rescues had purchased Banfield's scanner, pressure was put on Banfield, and they stopped microchipping with their own, proprietary chips. I don't know if they ever started up again, using the chips that everyone else uses and can scan.

And yes, JCAC scans for microchips using the common scanner. I don't know if they also purchased a Banfield scanner.
