ARCHER'S LODGE, N.C. — State troopers said alcohol was a factor in the collision of two pickup trucks on Buffalo Road that killed a Clayton High graduate two blocks from her parents' home.
Shannon Nicole Adkins, of Clayton, was driving truck north on Buffalo, near Kentucky Drive, around midnight Saturday, troopers said. The driver of a pickup truck going south on Buffalo crossed the center and struck Adkins' pickup.
Adkins' pickup truck overturned and rolled onto the shoulder of the road, at the entrance to the Horseman's Run subdivision.
Adkins, who was wearing her seat belt, died at the scene, troopers said.
The driver of other pickup truck was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh. Her identity and an update on her condition were not available.
Troopers said that alcohol was a factor and that Adkins had not been drinking.
Adkins mother, Ernie, said she felt angry after hearing that news from troopers.
"I'm nobody's mama anymore," she said. "I'll never be a grandmother because of this woman who chose to drink and drive. She had no right to kill my baby."
Ernie Adkins said she was staying up, waiting for her daughter to get home, when she heard a "horrific" noise.
"I heard the crash. She was that close to home," said Ernie Adkins. She and her husband walked out to the crash scene and learned of their daughter's death from troopers.
Adkins graduated from Clayton High School this past spring and was pursuing a criminal justice major at Wayne County Community College in Goldsboro, her mother said.
"That's my pride and joy right there. She was a good girl. You couldn't ask for no better," Ernie Adkins said.
Adkins did her senior project studying why Johnston County leads the state in auto-related teen deaths. The rides and help given her by Johnston sheriff's deputies had inspired her to study criminal justice, her mother said.
Since 2006, more than 25 teens have died in wrecks on Johnston roads.
"It's got to stop," Ernie Adkins said. "How many more children have got to die? How many more grownups? How many more mamas are not coming home because of a drunk driver?"

That's one of the saddest things I've heard in a long time. That poor family, so, so horrible, what they are going through is devastating.

I cannot find the link but there is a national cause going on that you can become an advocate on Speak UP Against Reckless Driving. I am not at work nor at home but working off a library computer. I will send later on when I get a moment.

I was so sorry to hear of another lost young life and once again a drunk driver was involved.

Hearing about this broke my heart.

Why can't we seem to punish drunk drivers? Yeah yeah I know that won't stop it entirely, but if you know you may get out of a DWI charge via our court system, where's the incentive to not drive under the influence?

It seems that the attorneys postpone and postpone Drunk Driving cases until the Highway Patrolmen who made the arrest can't show in court and then the accused gets a lesser charge. (That is NOT the patrolman's fault)
Why do the judges let this happen??
    I understand the attorney's motivation($)

Doesn't the breathalizer count for anything? or the video from the patrolman's car?
I mean, seriously, if you were arrested for driving under the influence, either you were or you weren't under the influence!! right?

Why isn't anyone accountable for their actions these days?

    What Can Be Done

You know, drunk driving is a terrible problem, but nothing will ever really change until WE as citizens force that change.

Right here in Johnston County, our District Attorney discovered that a former assistant DA had conspired with some of our local honorable defense attorneys to provide them with pre-signed blank Dismissal Forms that were used to DISMISS MANY DWI CASES! It is also possible that a member of the Clerks Office that filed these false forms may also have been involved.

Now it appears that no one will face any criminal charges, and only the shifty former Assistant DA will have real sanctions by the Bar Association. Everyone else gets a slap on the proverbial wrist and goes back to work!

Until the people of NC and Johnston County get fed up and start publicly venting their displeasure over such courthouse shenanigans, the problem will persist and folks will continue to die at the hands of the growing number of drunken drivers.

Her wake and funeral were yesterday (11th). She was the cousin of one of our band directors.

My kids wonder why I worry so much when they are out and they think it is always because of something they might do, but a like I try to tell them, it isn't that I am worried about what they may do, but what someone else may do. This is so very very sad. Makes one want to hug their kids and hold on.
