Still cleaning out areas of our house and need a recommendation on someone who could appraise and/or purchase antiques.

Several years ago Antiques Roadshow came to our area and my mother took a solid brass Japanese soldier for an appraisal. They offered her somewhere around 2 to 5 thousand dollars for it without looking it up. She called me and I told her not to sell as it was probably worth more. We have used it for a door stop for many years and I'm ready to get rid of it.

We also have a bowl that has the date on the bottom along with "Occupied China", which I have been told is worth something.

Loads of stuff like this. We have a spinning wheel that has been passed down through the family and I am the lucky one to have it sitting on a shelf in the garage (it probably is not worth anything).

Anyhow, need a recommendation that will hopefully come to the house and look around.

    Thanks,
    Sherry

I don't know anyone around here, but please be careful. After my grandparents died, we had an appraiser come and give us estimates on lots of beautiful antiques. She made sure the prices were good and low, then came back and wanted to buy all of it during our sale so she could resell it.

There are a few who will do estate auctions, where the amount made by the auctioneer is directly related to the price they can get for the items.

Heck, I would not know if I was getting ripped off or not. I'd like to speak with someone who is ethical. Any ideas?

I do not as I have only been on the purchasing side of the estate sales, however the one auction I can think of which specializes in antiques is in Mebane. I have seen their auctions bring what I thought was exceptional prices for some items and reasonable prices for others more often. The name is Mebane Antique Auction on US 70 in Mebane ...

You may also want to check with Bostic Wilson Antiques in Fuquay. Call and ask for Jewel Riles. She was recommended to me also for an Antique Dining Room Table.

Thanks to all and to the member who PM'd me. All look ethical in their dealings so I will move on this soon.
