    Artists-in-the-School Program Begins its Seventh Year in the Johnston County Schools

    October 3rd marks the beginning of the seventh year of the Artists-in-the-Schools program. Since its inception in 1999, Artists-in-the-Schools has raised over $650,000 to fund over 650 cultural events in the Johnston County Schools. Building on the success of the previous six years, Johnston County Schools will play host to over 50 different artists for more than 130 cultural programs in the 2005-06 school year.

    Anyone interested in observing any performances should call the school to request permission and confirm the date and time of the performance. The Artists-in-the-Schools Program is supported by the Fred Smith Company, the Johnston County Arts Council, Johnston County Schools and corporate, foundation and individual donors.

    Mad Science will perform at Micro-Pine Level Elementary School on October 6, 2005 at 9am and 10am. Mad Science will present an interactive program of amazing science and unbelievable feats of science and nature.

    Dr. Tom's Semi-Silent Theater will perform Character That Counts at Benson Elementary School on October 12,2005. Using mime, drama, humor, and tons of audience participation, Dr. Tom and the students examine how good character promotes high moral standards.

    Mad Science will perform Up, Up, and Away at East Clayton Elementary School on October 17, 2005 at 8:45am and 9:45am. Mad Science will present an interactive program of amazing science and unbelievable feats of science and nature.

    Mike Wiley will perform One Noble Journey at Clayton Middle School on October 20, 2005 at 1:15 PM. Mike Wiley will perform his one-man play, One Noble Journey about the efforts of one man to escape the perils of slavery in 1849 by crating and shipping himself to a new life in Philadelphia.

    Mike Wiley will perform One Noble Journey at Cleveland Middle School on October 20, 2005 at 7:45 AM. Mike Wiley will perform his one-man play, One Noble Journey about the efforts of one man to escape the perils of slavery in 1849 by crating and shipping himself to a new life in Philadelphia.

    Gran'daddy Junebug will perform The Jealous Farmer at Princeton School on October 21, 2005 at 1:00 PM. Gran’daddy Junebug specializes in storytelling to instill personal responsibility and respect of self and others.

    Jody Cassell will perform at McGee's Crossroads Elementary School on October 24, 2005 at 9:15 AM. Through folk stories, sound, and creative movement, Jody emphasizes learning by participation.

    Lee Bryan will perform at Selma Elementary School on October 25, 2005 at 9am and 10am. Lee will perform original songs, magic tricks, and puppets to deliver an environmental message in this unique vaudeville revue.

    National Tap Ensemble will perform Tops in Taps: Great American Heroes at Four Oaks Middle School on October 25, 2005 at 8:15 am and 9:15 am. This show highlights the uniquely American dance and honors the history and performers of the past.

    Marc Spiegel will perform Einstein Alive at Cleveland Middle School on October 26, 2005 at 8:00 AM. Einstein Alive is a one-man show about Albert Einstein, his life, and "adventures" within his mind.

    National Tap Ensemble will perform at South Johnston High School on October 26, 2005 at 8:15 am and 9:20 am. This show highlights the uniquely American dance and honors the history and performers of the past.

    Poetry Alive! will perform at North Johnston Middle School on October 28, 2005. Poetry Alive! brings poetry from the page to the stage transforming the poems into scripts and the audience members into fellow actors.

    Mimi Herman will conduct a writing residency at Glendale-Kenly Elementary School from October 24-28, 2005. Mimi Herman will work with third graders for a 5-day residency on journal writing.
