I had posted something in the 40/42 classified and received a reply by someone claiming to be from the UK. This person claimed that he was working on behalf of a client that required the item that I was selling. Well, this fool was very persistent in knowing my personal information than the condition of the item I was selling. I knew this by his first email that he had dishonorable intentions! I guess the first flag was when he was willing to send a check that was 45% more than the price I was asking.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

It is very common and yes a scam. Read the warning on here when you start to place an ad, it tells you about it. I get probably 5 scams per ad I place...

It's a scam. If I am not mistaken they are really only validating the email address. So beware of extra spam or viruses. They look for key words like "car, for sale, truck, etc etc. Sorry. My advice, don't open suspicious emails including foreign or weird looking addresses. What are the odds of someone from the UK wanting to buy a car from a little community site in NC?

The new scam out there is those "mailer-daemon" or "post undeliverable" type emails. So if you receive those also don't bother opening them unless they are coming from your recognizable address.

Also, we are working on the install of a Captcha module on the Classifieds to help prevent automated replies to ads.

CAPTCHA (an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") requires you to enter a set of number displayed as a graphic when replying to with a form. Since the automated scammer software that generates the replies to classified ads can't "see" the graphic, it can't reply to the ad.
