Johnston County Board of Education passes resolution
Board calls for joint meeting with county commissioners

SMITHFIELD*The Johnston County Board of Education approved a resolution at their August 9 meeting calling for a joint meeting with the Board of Commissioners on or before September 15, 2006, to allow the Board time to address the needs of the Johnston County Schools with the Commissioners. The resolution is the Board's preferred alternative to a joint meeting that was to be held by the County Commissioners with Johnston Community College and the Board of Education, says Fred Bartholomew, Chairman of the Board of Education.

"Our mission and needs are markedly different than those of the community college. Accordingly, it is our desire to have an open and focused discussion devoted to the issues fronting the Johnston County Board of Education," said Bartholomew. He added that the impact that the county's tremendous growth is having on school facilities requires in-depth discussion. The public would be invited to attend.

Dr. Anthony Parker, Superintendent, emphasized the school district's support for Johnston Community College. "The community college and the public schools historically have supported each other's facility needs. Our mutual support of those needs is continuous," said Dr. Anthony Parker, Superintendent.

"The board passed the resolution because of its desire to participate in direct dialogue with the commissioners based on the county's needs as it relates to Pre-K through twelfth grade public education. The Board of Education has always maintained a working relationship with the Board of Commissioners and hopes to maintain strong support for both groups (Johnston County Schools and Johnston Community College)," said Bartholomew. "The Board of Education's commitment to serving the needs of the children of Johnston County warrants on-going, open communication among those bodies that are charged with the responsibility of running an effective school system."
