I have noticed that there are alot of moms here, so hoping someone can give me some input. My oldest son will be crossing over from cub scouts to boy scouts soon. We had a meeting last night to discuss the changes that would be taking place. Do the boys still enjoy being a scout or is all of the fun taken out with the additional work? What can we expect from a parent and child view? Any input would be great. Thanks:confused:

I thinnk it depends on the child. my son dropped scouts after he crossed over. i know some did and some didnt.

ImTheNormalOne is right - it depends on the child. My son crossed over and loves it. He just received the rank of First Class and says now that he is going to be an Eagle Scout. About half of the boys in his den dropped out when they crossed over or shortly thereafter. It gets hard when they have so many things to do. My son does not participate in a lot of sports because of asthma so this is kind of his thing.

He loves being in weblos now, also not a sports nut so it gives him something to do. I just wonder about next year.

have him try it. i couldnt even get my son to try, but he is a sports nut and would have been too much anyhow.

Part of it will depend on whether or not he enjoys the troop he is in. There is one troop in the area that pretty much concentrates on the camping aspect of scouting and little else. Other troops concentrate on other parts of scouting. Most parents do not realize that their sons do not have to go to the troop that is associated with the Cub Scout pack. "Shop around" this spring with the troops in the area and see which one he likes best. A lot of boys do drop out, but they are usually the ones who were half-hearted about completing activities in Cub Scouts or who were the ones who lacked self-discipline to behave themselves at meetings during Cub Scouts. Boy Scouts do expect more out of the boys in the ways of leadership and self-discipline and responsibility.

I have to agree with what most said, it depends on the child. My son is still with it, he loves it, he's an all round kid, loves sports, band, scouts, skateboarding, etc. A lot of the kids he crossed over with, however, have dropped out, some within the first few weeks, a few lasted longer, and just recently dropped out. Before you go and spend all the $$ for the new uniforms, etc., check ebay and craigslist :)

The scouting meetings at CES & WVES were packed last week!

Anyone have a navy blue scout shirt they have outgrown - say boys size 6-8?

How do I get more info on Boyscouts??? We missed the meeting and I have 2 boys (2nd & 3rd grades) that would love to join. They are 8 & 9yo. What do I need to do? We were unable to attend orientation and really, really want to join. Thanks for letting me know.

    Stephanie,

The school that your child goes to has between 1-3 cub scout packs that recruit from that school. You can call the council office to find out the contact information for those packs and where they meet. The council office is 919-734-1714. I am the Assistant Cubmaster for Pack 66 and would be delighted for any and all to come and join our pack if you are interested. We typically recruit from Polenta, West Smithfield and Wilson's Mills but will be happy to have anyone come and join our Pack. Feel free to PM me with any further questions and I will be happy to answer them. I hope your boys enjoys Scouts!!

Pack #33 Meets at Oakland Presbyterian Church- the parents (not the boys) meet on TUESDAY night at 7pm - per the letter we picked up at the WVES sign up night.

I know there is a troop at Mt Zion #64 I think, and at the Presbyterian Church on NC210, + one at Garner 1st Presbyterian on NC50.
and in Clayton, Smithfield...& so on.

JoCo is not in the same Coucil as Wake Co. so those troops usually go to different camps- or so I was told. JoCo troops are based out of Goldsboro, NC.
