Smithfield, N.C. — Johnston County Schools officials are considering delaying the openings of two high schools by a year to save money in a tight budget year. Corinth Holders High School and Cleveland High School are scheduled to open in August 2010, but school board members said Thursday the might push that back a year. The delay would save the school district $2.6 million, which officials said could be used to prevent staff cuts. http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/5242828/
Rather than modify the ancient tax base we have in NC, the House seems poised to abuse education even more. It would be laughable, if it was in a movie. That NC continues to have education get the crappy end of the stick is beyond description. To call it penny wise and pound foolish is a miniscule description of the House's inability to look forward. Nope, same old tired ways. NC gives generous tax breaks to wealthy corporations, but can't find a way to pay for education that our children need.
I agree Hatteras! Our dd has one more year left in this crappy system. Her senior year will be a joke, like her junior one. Not the teachers faults but the hand they were dealt. This past year her spring semester was all electives. Now she only needs two core courses to graduate and the rest will be electives again-what a waste of time! She is on the wait list for the middle college- a sign of the times that these kids want a better education. At least there she could take real college courses and learn something! So, instead she wants to graduate in Dec and go into college early. Way back when....I had regular courses all through high school. That meant math, english, science, history etc.every semester! Now with the overcrowding the teachers are challenged just to teach the material they can. Education is the one area where I would certainly be willing to pay more towards if it meant our children could be better prepared for college and the real world. Nuff said....
Have you considered homeschooling her? Once a child is 16 they can dual enroll at the community college and earn high school and college credits at the same time. I have heard of many home schooled high schoolers who then start college as sophmores because of the credits earned through dual enrollment.
I agree with ncmom-my neice and nephew did this and I think from 16 to 18 you can take the classes for free-that's right free. Both entered college as sophomores-just be careful of the classes you take that they transfer correctly. One graduating engineer at NC State and one studying pharmacy at UNC. Why waste her time at HS unless she is actively involved in some extramural sport/club?
There will be a workshop by a representative of Wake Tech to explain "concurrent" (a.k.a. dual) enrollment at the Johnston County Home Educators annual Bookfair and Homeschool Conference. The event will be Saturday, July 11th at Hocutt Memorial Baptist in Clayton. The workshop schedule will be available soon at www.jchenc.org. I understand Wake Tech has some information meetings planned for June, too.
It is ridiculous, my fiance just graduated from UNC Wilmington in December of 2008 with a degree in Elementary Education and she can't find a job besides substituting and temp positions. I never thought I'd see the day when a licensed teacher couldn't even find a job. Not to mention she graduated with the Chancellor's Achievement award, Magna Cum Laude and an awesome GPA! Most of the time she can't even get substituting positions because there are other teachers that have been substituting longer than her. I just hope something changes in the near future. End rant.
There are also MANY classes the kids can take on campus at their HS taught by JCC instructors and received CC credit. They can also take classes through UNCG while in HS.
are they still going to pay the salaries for the admins that they already appointed for these schools.....if so then how is the county saving anymore $$$ The county would rather keep WJHS over capacity by 1250 students where there is not enough room for kids to take classes that one are needed & wanted
From http://www.1270wmpm.com/ As a result of the possible delay, no principals were named to replace Anne Meredith at Smithfield Middle and Ross Renfrow at North Johnston High, who were named recently as the new principals at Corinth and Cleveland.
Well they have to go over the roads to get to school, right?:jester: But it would be nice if there were schools to get to!

First of all wealthy corporations provide jobs for the parents of all the children. Secondly, where is all that lottery money the greedy government said would solve all our education budget shortfalls?
which begs the question....where is all the road money from our highest in the southeast gas tax? You libs continue to vote in these dummies.
What I would like to know is why at CHS are they putting the football field/track right at the front of the road???? Guess I'll be able to sit on my deck on Friday nights and listen to the games for free. I was hoping that they would hold off for another year opening CHS. I wnated the housing market to improve some more so I could sell my house to a teacher (small house, great first-time buyer one) or soemone w/ a kid who wants to go there since they would be able to walk every day. Wonder if the opening will help or hurt my property values?
2 billion? http://www.lotterypost.com/news/183374 The North Carolina Education Lottery said it sent $99.8 million to a dedicated state fund Wednesday morning. The money is used for class-size reduction and pre-kindergarten initiatives, public school construction and college scholarships. The lottery began selling tickets in March 2006 and has generated to date $825 million for these programs. Lottery executive director Tom Shaheen said Wednesday the lottery is still on pace to give $385 million in profits to the state for the fiscal year ending next June 30.
Straight, Depending on where you are it could do either, I think it would help more than hurt though.
