SHELBY, N.C. — A North Carolina man who wants to sell his home has come up with a $1 million idea.
Rodney McGee of Shelby says he'll award his home to the person who writes the best essay, but only if 2,000 essay writers pay $500 each to enter the contest.
McGee said it's harder to sell his nearly 3,000 square foot, four bedroom, three bathroom home, WSOC-TV in Charlotte reported Thursday.
"My best chance would be maybe to do an essay, and at the same time give someone body a chance to own a home for a whole lot less money," he said.
He set up a Web site where anyone can submit an essay to win his house, which he said he could only sell for about $200,000 in the current real estate market.
He's also selling land in Florida the same way, except he's asking for a $1,000 entry fee.
Some of McGee's neighbors aren't pleased with his concept and called his homemade sign advertising the Web site tacky.
McGee is also offering a Mustang and Hawaii vacation as the second- and third-place prizes. His Web site said he's a retired entrepreneur who is ready to downsize.
"If I was a younger person and had my children at home, I would enter a contest like this myself," McGee told WSOC-TV.
The essays will be judged by three people. If the contest has to be canceled, McGee will refund 90 percent of the entry fee, he said.
He talked to city officials who said the contest is legal, he said.

A Utah couple was charged with aggravated assault after a brawl broke out between neighbors attending a baby shower.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the unidentified husband and wife, aged 35 and 40, were charged with aggravated assault after police said the woman approached a neighbor and struck her with a shovel, knocking her unconscious, during a baby shower in Salt Lake City.
Police said the woman's husband pulled a shotgun from a truck and swung it at other attendees. He faces an additional charge of interference with an arresting officer after officials said he resisted arrest, the Tribune said.
The neighbor who was knocked unconscious was revived when police arrived, according to the paper.
