From WRAL - what do you think?

Hanging out with friends and watching TV, 16-year-old Shaniqua Douglas looks like your typical teenager, not a criminal locked in jail.

But jail is exactly where she ended up this week, after being arrested at Green Hope High School in Cary.

"I'm upset about it, I'm really upset about it," said Aileen Douglas, the mother of the ninth-grader.

According to the police report, Shaniqua caused a public disturbance at school by using abusive language intended to provoke violent reaction. In other words, she was arrested for using profanity.

"The student was in an argument with some other students and was swearing," said Cary Police Capt. David Wulff. "The principal came over and asked her to settle down and to stop swearing. She continued to swear."

Shaniqua said that's when the police were called.

"I was like, 'Get the (edited) off of me,' and then he threw me on the wall and placed the handcuffs on me and said, 'You're going to jail,'" said Shaniqua.

The teen was charged with disorderly conduct. She is now scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 11.

"Anytime you cause a disruption, disorderly conduct comes into play," said Wulff.

Aileen Douglas said she doesn't condone her daughter's behavior, but she said she feels the punishment didn't fit the crime.

"I feel like they should have called me before it even escalated. Before it got that far, I should have been called," she said.

A Wake County School System representative said that the system cannot comment on disciplinary actions involving students.

Officials at Green Hope High School were unavailable for comment after the school was shut down in the wake of the Apex chemical fire.

One should not be placed in jail for words. No words even the most hateful words we can use have ever broken the skin or bone. The fact that the police placed anyone in jail over words is silly and wasteful of time and tax dollars. Should the student be punsihed for thier use of words and failing to act like a normal human being in public. YES! they should. But the school system and the parent should be the guiding rule here. Complete over reaction by a principal and a complete under reaction by the parent(s).

It seems to me that she was arrested not for swearing but for not cooperating with the officers. If I mouthed off to officers in the manner that she appeared to, I'd be under the jail as well. She got in the officers face and they arrested her, not a problem in my book. Far too many children have little to no respect for any adult let alone someone in a police uniform.

Same here, if she'd shut her mouth when told to do so, she wouldn't have been put in jail. Simple as that.

Did you see the picture of the beautiful Shanika?

Jail now, or in five years, it's going to happen.

At least this way she will be familiar with her potential home! :D

According to what I read in the first post, the principle came over to try settle things and she wouldn't cooperate, she continued to esscalate the argument. The principle (and I'm sure a few teachers and/or students) tried to settle it before the officers where called.

I didn't mean it that way.
If it was a white girl with ten tattoos, and a dozen earrings, I would have said the same thing.
If a child speaks this way to an authority figure at this age, regardless or race, I would have said the same thing.
If that was my daughter acting that way to an adult/police officer, I would have been happy that they arrested her.
Kids of today are so rude, maybe Ms. Shaniqua's arrest will be a wake up call to the other's.

I hate to say this, but it wouldn't supprise me that this becomes a race thing.

Suppose this was an adult who was pulled over for a traffic ticket, and got beligerent with the officer.

Suppose that when the officer told the adult to calm down after the adult began swearing at the officer, the adult then told the officer to "Get the F*** off me".

Don't you think the adult would be handcuffed and taken to jail?

I do. And the case of this young thuggette is no different.

Observing the chip on her shoulder has NOTHING to do with race.

Shame on you for going to the gutter so quickly, but you leftists see EVERYTHING in terms of race, don't you?

The school should have never let it get that far. Too many people today forget that kids have to be put in thier place. Too many parents refuse to disipline their offspring and let the rest of the world suffer.

Typical. The poll question is flawed. From the reports I saw, she was not arrested for swearing, but was charged with disorderly conduct for nearly inciting a riot.

Of course it will. Thats how leftist agitators incite unrest and make political hay.

wouldn't have said a thing about race except spunky first refered to the student's picture (and when has a mug shot ever been flattering?)
i am in total agreement resisting an officier is grounds for being arrested --
i understand too administrators often feel the situation escalates and calling in law enforcement is the appropriate action to take care of an immediate need -- have no problems with that either ---
teen behavior is not always an indicator of how one will be as an adult -- although judging from some posts there are a few who have seemingly never grown up

Oy a er Ed or whatever, I know you don't know how to pay attention, but have you seen Spunky's previous posts? This comment just reinforced what most of us have observed.

I believe the first 7 words of the article sum up this kid's life, and what made her that way. The same week she was arrested for her antics, she is "hanging out with friends and watching TV". Not being punished, not having privileges removed. If you saw SNL last night, there was a skit that reminded me of this situation.
