Is it true that some cat breeds / colors have similar personality traits. For example, I've been told that calico cats can be quite (rhymes with) witchy. We had a male orange tabby, and totally loved the temperment of that cat. He died several years ago, and we're thinking of getting another cat. Of course, no cat can replace another exactly personality wise, but I was just wondering if another orange male tabby might have the same sweet personality.

I don't know............but one of my cats is a tabby, and the vet said they are the "redheads" of the cat world. She is hell on wheels, let me tell you. She put the new puppy on her back yesterday morning according to DH, and the dog outweighs her significantly now. Thank heavens she's de-clawed.

I have three cats due to trying to find one like the one that had passed away. We got a calico first and she is mean. Then we got two tabby's. They are very loving and sweet.

I'm surprised you don't have more answers by now from the animal experts on here, and we have quite a few that really do know a lot about animals. I think each cat has its own personality, so it's good to try to spend some time with the cat before you adopt it.

Don't know about the color having anything to do with it but the male tabbies I've had throughout my life are much cuddlier than the rotten little snobby girls. I have 2 males and 1 female now. 1 male that is super loving, buffy colored tabby, 1 tuxedo that couldn't care less. Female is long-haired maine coon mix, funny as heck but definitely not a lap cat. Acts like she knows she's pretty.

Male that disappeared last year was a gray/brown tabby and he was the sweetest cat I have ever had. Just an old farm cat, appreciative I think.

    That's my plan

I've been emailing with several jcapl.org people about some cats on that site. They have a great program that you can even bring the cat to your home for up to 7 days, and if things aren't right, the animal can be returned to them with adoption amt either refunded or never paid until that 7 day period.

We had a female grey/white that just hated me. We had a grey tabby that was wonderful, and an orange male tabby that was perfect once we had him fully neutered. When he was neutered, only one 'thing' had dropped, so that's the only one the stupid vet removed. This little kittie continued to mark in the house. No amount of tin foil, kitty downers, etc would stop him. Then I tried a new vet and within 10 min she found he was still operating at 50%. One of this 'things' never dropped. Once that was taken care of, he was the best kittie.

Even when watching the Animal Vet show, I remember the older man there saying he loved orange tabbys.

    Mattie's white and deaf!

    1. Easily trainable
    2. You can find her in the dark
    3. Her *other* senses kick in if you are walking towards her
    4. She is freaking great!!!!
    5. Very friendly and LOVES everyone - as long as you rub her belly. (gut) :?
    6. Likes her own space (on my computer tower because it's warm)
    7. Loves the camera

    You get the point.

I had an orange maine coon once ... he was a sweetheart. A cuddler ... but a twit. Acted blond, more than orange. Even sometimes got a clueless look on his face. He was a riot. Was a permanent kitten. I love orange cats.

Tabby cats in general strike me as the 'mutts' of the cat world. All around good cats. I've had some good friends that were tabby cats.

I've been busy but just had a chance to check out this thread - I've met a huge number of cats over the last 10 years. . .too many to count.

I've never heard about color and personalities prior to this - BUT other than those that are feral, or have been known to have been mistreated. . .

I've never met an orange cat that wasn't sweet. (99.9% of orange cats are MALE) Like elims - I LOVE orange kitties too - my very first cat was orange and I've always had a soft spot for them. . .I don't know why I don't have an orange kitty now. . .but no, I don't need another cat, thankyou :)

As far as Calicos go (and also Tortie/pastel or diluted Calicos) which are 99.9% female - I've never met one that wasn't a really nice cat.

I've never met a white cat that was an adult that didn't LIVE for food. Almost every one has been overweight once they've reached adulthood and pure white ones are sometimes, but not always deaf.

I've never met a Siamese that wasn't a goofball - I mean that in a nice way - they have all been characters.

I've never met a Maine Coon (pure breed) that didn't act very similar to a dog. They have all been full of personality.

i have to rock my tabby kitty like a baby everyday. he's very spoiled and craves attention.
my tortie cat is moody. she only wants to be loved at certain times. she's more of a loner.
and zoo, i didn't know that about white cats. my white cat always acts like she is starved to death.

i have 3 spoiled kittens that are ready for new homes if anyone is looking. hopefully i'm getting out of the stray kitty business after this.

Tangie, I said "I've never met a white cat that was an adult that didn't LIVE for food. Almost every one has been overweight once they've reached adulthood"

Meaning all they want to do was eat

2 new kitties we adopted today

Thanks for all your replies. We ended up going to PetSmart and JCAPL and just playing with the kitties until we found 2 we could not leave without:) We adopted these 2 kitties from JCAPL today. The white one's name was Dolly. We've renamed her to Princess. The grey one's name was Daisy Duke. We've dropped the Duke.
So, now we have Daisy and Princess.

I'll upload pics as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Before I got married, I used to show purebred cats in cat shows all over southeastern side of USA. I have owned several breeds and are very familiar with their personalities:

    1. Maine Coon - very affectionate, always want your attention, and happy.
    2. Manx - loves to play and hunt, demanding your attention, very noisy.
    3. Scottish Fold - very loving and friendliest, loud purr, rag doll-like body, loves to cuddle.
    4. Siamese - very noisy, picky, independent, bossy.

My last cat died last year and he was a Scottish Fold breed. He was one of my best cat I've had and I missed him still. I'm now a proud owner of a Beagle. :)

I have always noticed that males in cats and dogs tend to be more laid back then the females. Just my 2 cents.
    Color shouldn't matter I wouldn't think.

Ragdolls are very close to the the maincoon personalities. My parents have two of them. The male is much more laid back, where the female is sweet, but she doesn't like to be picked up.

Norwegian Forest Cats are also have very similar personalities. I grew up with a Maine Coon who was Mr. Personality Plus, and now we have a Norwegian Forest Cat and I do see lots of similarites. Orion, or NWF is very laid back, talks (chirps), he is about 11 yrs old, and still acts like a kitten at times!

I know this is a old thread and Blessed2adopt2 already got her new kittys, but I had to comment. ALL orange tabby cats I have ever met have been very very sweet! I have personally owned 2. The first was a big male my sweet Sunkist (Sunny) and the one I have now is a petite female my little Raya (My little Raya sunshine I call her). I have encountered many other orange tabbys and all have been sweet. ORANGE tabbys, not so sure about all the others. I used to have a brown and black male tabby and he was very grouchy and a bit crazy too. :) But I LOVE the orange ones!

Speaking of orange tabbys (tabbies?) ... if you know of anyone living in Northeastern PA, my best friend helps run a horse rescue that has three orange tabby kittens for adoption. Someone dumped two litters of kittens off at the rescue. Horses ... cats ... same difference to some people, I guess!
