Mike has lost a tooth! The vet said he would be having dental problems eventually due to all the vaccinations. She said dental problems were a side effect of the shots. And since I'm at least the third owner, there's no telling how many shots he's had. So... it looks like we'll be going the canned food route :ack: Right now his regular diet consists of dry food (which I've noticed he's stopped crunching) and the occasional squirrel. He eats from an automatic feeder so I can't say really how much he eats. It's not a lot. Maybe it would be more if it were canned. He's only about 10 lbs. ...long body...Mama says he's skinny but her cat looks like a butterball turkey....can't walk for waddling. How many cans of cat food does a cat eat? What is a normal amount to feed? And which is the best to buy?
I have no idea Mattie was on dry food except when she was sick. I'd give her 1/2 a can to start with but then again she was only 5 lbs. Give Mike hugs from us.
We give one of our cats canned food on occasion when she gets a little too lean. The other is a piggy cat so she doesn't get the "treat". We use the Fancy Feast and they are small cans and we give her the whole can. If Mike is only eating canned food, you may want to do one can in the morning and one at night, or if you buy a larger can give 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night.
Fancy Feast here too, on the rare occasion I give wet food. She will only eat the kind in "gravy". Funny to watch her beg for it too. Yes, I am mean, LOL. I don't give wet food as a rule, bad for her teeth and I hate the smell of the "end" result. I see where yours is having teeth issues, have you tried softening the dry with a little warm water?
You should see my kitchen when all the cats hear the pop-top of the cat food can... if I could only get them trained for a Christmas Chorale with all the different begging meows! I would go with 1/2 in the a.m. & 1/2 in the p.m. of a 6oz (tuna size) can. I would leave the dry food out still, for when he might feel like grazing between meals. Thankfully my cats aren't too picky, I buy either 9-Lives or Friskies, whichever is on sale or cheaper. I don't get them the off-brands, or store brands though, those seem a little worse on the litter-box end.
ew... we don't do the litter box. We did it last year when it snowed. How's that for spoiled? lol We kept one in the house for at least a year for 'just in case' but he never used it, until it snowed. It was an upper canine that fell out. His molars are intact. Looks like there is a vet visit in out future. I tried moistening the dry food with water. He was hungry after his nap but would have no part of it. Can't say as I blame him. It looked pretty nasty! I'll get some cans and keep the dry available. At least he doesn't use the canines for eating....and has no desire to mate lol and the only other cat to fight with in the neighborhood is his buddy. .. Guess the squirrels have a better chance these days lol.... hopefully he won't gum them to death.
You may have some luck using a food/spice grinder on the kibble and then mixing a little low sodium chicken stock/broth into it. It'd probably be a lot cheaper than using a good quality canned.
