I am looking to get a child friendly digital camera for my children, 1st/2nd grade. I read various reviews for Fisher Price, Polaroid, Crayola and Vteh brands. All get poor reviews for image quality. My top choices right now are Fisher Price and Vtech (has ability to also capture 5 min. video). With the reviews I've read, I don't know what people are comparing the cameras to. I don't expect top quality pictures but do want my children to have a good picture. I am also exploring low cost digital cameras... not necessarily a "child" one...as a possible option.

Suggestions or opinions about those child digital cameras?

My husband was at the Disney store at Crabtree and he said he also saw one like the fisher price camera. My daughter is asking for one also. She is always using my digital camera and snapping away.

Seems the Fisher-Price one has the best resolution for the money and I'd bet its the most durable. We've already picked one up for our child and I think it'll be a popular item for Christmas.

What was the price on that one?

$48 I think it was at Wal-Mart. Of course, that doesn't include the $14 case. We haven't bought that yet and I'm not sure we will.

I think the Polaroid has a slightly higher resolution but its like $80 or something. It might be a better camera if you could find it on sale. That Fisher-Price case looks way overpriced. If the camera is so durable, maybe we won't need a case.

I'm thinking the Fisher-Price packaging says 1.2 megapixels. I'll have to look again. The only thing I'm wondering about is the ability of the Polaroid to take a lot of abuse. If it is truly to be the child's own camera, they are most certain to drop it regularly. The Fisher-Price is marketed to be able to take abuse. That's what sold me on it. However, I might take it back for the Polaroid. I'll have to take a wait and see approach right now. I'm not sure if the one we bought is the best for the money at this point.

this is the question at our house, too. the boy has become quite the director/host, filming all kinds of segments for his own version of tv shows like survivorman and stuff on tlc about fixing houses and gardening....

    thanks for the tips.

I just checked. The Fisher-Price is 1.3 interpolated megapixels or 640x480 resolution for 4x6 prints. I can already tell that this is going to be one of those purchases I'll wrestle with on resolution vs. durability.

Plus, you can't always go by reviews I've discovered. I bought my kid a Radio Flyer pedal go-cart last year. People that reviewed it said that it was shoddy and wouldn't hold up past a few days. I bought this one already professionally-assembled and its still going strong after nearly a year.

Yeah, I don't trust a lot of user reviews either. I've found a lot of times, it's "operator error!" Might have to think about one of these for DS, he's 8 though, might be a little too old for these. DH wants a new digital camera, the TWO we have apparently aren't good enough any more  , maybe DS can have one of them. I don't know though, neither of them were cheap cameras. :?

I bought the Fisher-Price camera over the summer. Both of my kids (6 & 3.5) use it, but the 3.5 year old is more into it. I think my 6 YO thinks it's too babyish. It is very durable. It has been dropped and survived well. The sides are kind of rubbery feeling-I don't know if that is to help with grip or as a shock absorber. The pictures can come out great or terrible. Some of the pics have looked just like my camera and others are black or blurry. I'm not sure how much that has to do with the camera operator though. I've taken pictures with it and had them come out bad, though. I don't think it really needs the case. I would buy it again though because they have enjoyed using it and with a 3.5 YO, I needed it to be durable. Knowing your kids though, ncmom, I would probably go with a more mature camera and just teach them to put it in the case every time. When my 6 YO used an adult camera, she did very well. If I was buying one for just her, I would probably find a user-friendly 3.0MP. I've seen them for low prices recently.

You can add a memory card to the Fisher-Price, too. I just use the built-in memory. When it fills up (if we still out), I just delete the pictures of their foot, the ceiling and whatever else that not worth saving and give it back to them. I don't see that being a problem though, unless we go away and can't get to our computer to download.

Not sure age of your children, but they have one for kids at Radio Shack for under $20. Not kid tough like the FP one but still nice little camera if you child is old enough to be a little careful with it. Happy Holidays!

I just gave my 5 year old the V Tech and she LOVES IT!!! It does not have a zoom option but it does record short videos, takes pictures, has a flash, plays games, and lets you put silly hats/noses on the persons face if you wish too! You can view the pictures on a TV, computer or the LCD screen on the camera!! She has not put it down for more than an hour unless to sleep!!! Here is the link!!!

Oh and you can add more memory too!

It's a legit question, and trust me, one us parents struggle with!! DS informed us last night that he DOES want a Wii, might be too late to find one for a decent deal for Christmas though. I hate spending that much money, but everyone including my own sis says they are a lot of fun.
