Child Nutrition Staff Celebrates Excellence

    Staff Celebrates Outstanding Year, Staff Members

    SMITHFIELD* Using a country music theme as its backdrop, the Child Nutrition department thanked its Child Nutrition staff members with recognition for outstanding work, standout staffers, retirees, and squeaky clean kitchens at its annual banquet.
    Princeton's Cafeteria Manager, Barbara Penny, was named Child Nutrition Services Employee of the Year. She has worked on the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Penney is described as pleasant, extremely dedicated, and one who goes above and beyond. Her contributions and volunteer efforts on behalf of Relay for Life were noted.
    The Child Nutrition Service Assistant of the Year is Faye Smith. Her nomination described her as one with a "huge heart" who loves people, takes initiative, is a team-player.
    Juanita Jackson was given the Betsy Cooke Distinguished Service Memorial Award.
    Additonally, Elizabeth Taylor, Executive Director of Child Nutrition Services, announced that all of the 36 schools earned at least a 95% average sanitation rate from the Johnston County Health Department, while 18 of those schools earned 100% or more. The district's average sanitation score is 99.69.
    Officers were also inducted into the Johnston County School Nutrition Association. Connie House, Wilson's Mills Elementary School, was inducted as President; Mitzi Mitchell of Four Oaks Middle School, as Vice-President; and, Florence Pittman of Smithfield-Selma High School, as secretary.
    Also recognized as retirees were Shirley Campbell, 27 years, 11 months; Vida Elaine Lee, 23 years, five months; and, Gladys Mavisene Tanner, for 11 years and four months of service.
    Johnston County Schools' Child Nutrition Services is one of the top ten LEAs in North Carolina in the number of lunches served to children. They served more than 4.6 million meals/meal equivalents last year. It is also one of four child nutrition departments in North Carolina that has earned the District of Excellence Award meeting all standards set nationally by the School Nutrition Association, and one of 64 in the nation with this award certification. The goal for the current year is to break the 5 million meal/meal equivalent mark.
