Have you heard his latest radio commercial? Sure you have heard basically the same thing from other dealers....bring in any ad from any dealer and if we cant beat their price, we will give you $500 or $5000 in cash. Thats right, if we cant beat another dealers lowest price, we will give you whatevermoneyoffered in cash. We want to prove to you that we are the low price leader. Chris Leith's ad says he will not give you money if he cant beat the lowest price. Nope. He goes even better. He says he will give you the car. Period. Ok so lets put this in to work here. I go out and find an add for a 2006 Chevy whatever. It lists for $25,000 in the ad. I find the same car at Chris Leith and it lists for $25,500. His salesman says...ouch! thats $500 less than what we are selling for and we are rock bottom. Im not sure we can beat that. Let me check with the sales manager. Few mins later the salesman comes back and says....sorry..we cant sell our vehicle for that low of a price so.....you get the car for free! So intead of "losing" $500, he is going to give you a $25,000 car....for free. Of course he is going to beat any price but thats not the point. Does anyone here....except for T4TDover....believe in their wildest dreams that he will actually give you a car? For free? So why does he have to say that in his ad? Why does Mark Jacobson offer the $5000 if he cant beat any price. Why not just say..we will beat any advertised price..and leave it at that? Because the dealers think that some of you out there will go to their dealership in hopes of scoring a free car or free money. Personally, none of them will ever get my business.
I said the exact same thing to a friend the other day. Great minds think alike I suppose, either that or they think that society as a whole is really stupid.
Got some free money at a dealership in Smithfield last weekend (Classic Ford). They had a contest in the mail, no sales pitch or anything. Granted I ended up with a whole $1.00
Of course they can beat any price.....cause they are either going to make it up on the trade-in or the interest rate. It's all a numbers game. Salespeople hate to see me coming! I will only talk about one thing at a time. *1st - rock bottom price of the car/truck *2nd - they have no idea if I am trading until I get #1 *3rd - (listen up people) what is the first thing a salesperson asks ya when you walk in the door? "What kind of monthly payment are you looking for?" Never answer this question!!! Go ahead an have an amortization table with you with that has the in increments of $1,000 with various APR's. You can figure out your monthly payments based off of what they do with #1 or #2. When they ask me this question.....I always just reply "I didn't know that I told you that I was going to need to finance the car". If they ask how I am paying, again, I say...."Does it really matter at this point in time?"! I am tough with them but I work hard for my money! Bought my first car - brand new when I was 16 and then bought another at age 18 - all by myself.....not a soul went in with me and after all the research, I couldn't believe what I gnawed them down to. During my 12 years of marriage, my ex never "wheeled and dealed" for us.....I had to [/list]

I am there with ya! A year ago, I paid off a car for the first time. I swore a couple years ago that I would NEVER buy a new car again!! I would rather use that money to "live life" with. I couldn't imagine going back to paying $500+ a month - just to have a new car. My car is not bad, by any means but it's paid for and that is ALL that matters to me!
I used to work in dealerships... when we were looking for something to replace the Explorer last winter, salespeople either loved me or hated me.. I wasn't screwing around, I wasn't gonna waste anyones time if they didn't have what I was looking for, and I definitely wasn't answering financial questions before we got to whether or not they had something I was interested in. The first one that asked me, "where do you want your payment to be at?", I told him I used to work in a dealership in the sales office, and I wasn't playing that game. That cut to the chase pretty quick with them.... I had a vehicle in mind, $$ I was willing to pay for it, and either they had it or not... I only wasted 30 minutes in one dealership (Goldsboro Honda) out of about 10.. most we were in and out of in 10 minutes or less.
Ken, I have to caution your comment a little. You are correct about the tax benefits using the home equity loan; however, I work with a mortgage company in their Loss Mitigation department. I have had to foreclose on a lady that did just that and due to hardship could not make the payments. She lost her home but had the car. It is a risk/reward decision for someone to make. I do agree with your thoughts on trying to pay cash for a car though.
These stupid car deals make you wish you had a good freind at a delaership that could write you a written offer for a car...super cheap! You could then take that offer over to Chris Leith and say "Here, beat that!". I wonder how that would go over?
So, what's the catch? How do they Bait n Switch this one? I wonder if we will see on the news or five on your side, how they were forced to give somebody a car.
I haven't paid attention to the commercial, but is it only new vehicles? In that case, you won't be seeing five on your side anytime soon. All dealerships are charged the same priced from the manufacturer for the same car. Therefore, any new car dealer can meet the price of any other new car dealer. Take in the advertisement, or even take in a buyer's agreement and any new car dealer can match another's offer.
