Currently the Clayton Council on Aging Meals on Wheels has 3 daily routes and delivers 37 meals a day. They have the funds to expand to a 4th route. In order to start the new route they need 7 new volunteers. It takes about one (1) hour to make the deliveries. Ideally they need one volunteer for each day and backups to cover for the regular drivers. Volunteers pick up the lunchtime meals (Monday-Friday) at The Senior Center, 303 Dairy Road, Clayton. Call Mickie Martin at 934-6066 to volunteer. I have been delivering meals on wheels for about 8 years and it is a rewarding volunteer experience. Even if you can't commit to one day a week they can use substitute drivers.
I volunteer in Garner probably once every two weeks. I volunteer my lunch time at work and deliver theirs. I love talking to these elderly people. For some of them, it is all they have to look forward to. Wish I could help but between work, family and my obligations to Garner, well you know. Good luck.
Good article in Clayton News-Star this week on this need for volunteers. I hope some of you can help. www.claytonnews-star.com/news/2006101102367.html
Can you expand on which part of clayton they are putting the route on? IS it 40/42 area, actual town of clayton, Archer lodge clayton or smithfield/clayton.
"Can you expand on which part of clayton they are putting the route on? IS it 40/42 area, actual town of clayton, Archer lodge clayton or smithfield/clayton." You would have to ask Mickie Martin at 934-6066 . In the past they re-organized all the routes when they added the 3rd route. They try to organize each route not to have us crossing paths in our deliveries. The Clayton Center only delivers to the Clayton area. We do not go to Archer Lodge, Smithfield areas. I believe our farthest delivery is out Government Road. All my deliveries are within the town limits of Clayton on both sides of the railroad tracks.
