Anyone have any info or know where to look for additional info reguarding the Cleveland Aquatic Center? Planned to be built behind Sluggers batting cages on Cleveland Rd near the JCC building. I've got the membership brochure but just looking for more info. Thanks!
Is that the community pool that hopefully will be being built one day? I heard it would be a membership type of thing - but I don't have a clue what the prices will be like or what the facilities would look like yet. I also heard that one day if the pool becomes a reality - they are hoping to cover it with some type of bubble so the pool can be used in the winter also. I'm definately interested in learning more about this community, membership driven pool. My neighborhood doesn't have a pool and my yard isn't suitable for an inground pool. I would really enjoy having a pool nearby where my son could swim. It would be a great place for him to have fun & meet new friends and I wouldn't have to worry about all the troubles associated with maintaining a pool.
Melynda: From what I've seen so far they are having a membership drive now; offering a 1 time membership of $850. This will be discounted by $100 for those who pay in full by 30-Sept-2007. After that it's the full $850 for membership and $400 per year for dues. From what I've read there is a cover (dome) planned by 2013 for year round use. Sluggers has the brochures inside.
Thanks you guys for your interest and the info provided so far. Below I am posting an email that I have sent to Sluggers email list and to the GCAA email list. To keep the anonymity of this board, I'm including my email address at the bottom, as well as contact phone numbers. Please feel free to contact me any of those ways. There is also no attachment here, so you'd need to email me to get the attachment. Here's the email: Attached you will find the Membership Application for securing a membership at the proposed Cleveland Aquatic Center (CAC). This application is merely for holding your spot among only 300 family memberships. In other words, no money need be sent with the application. As many of you have heard by now, Sluggers is partnering with a non-profit corporation called Cleveland Aquatic Center, Inc., through land-lease, to bring the Cleveland Community its first membership-only, community swimming pool, to be open Spring 2008. The pool will be located behind the existing batting cages and will share parking with Sluggers. The pool will feature depths of 2-9 feet, twin diving boards, swim team, and detached kiddie pool. There will be a covered picnic area, bathrooms with indoor shower, and reserved space should the membership decide to add a snack bar. Added amenities provided by Sluggers will be a fitness area with treadmills, ellipticals, free weights, and multi-gym. The old arcade will be the home of the fitness area. The fitness area is included in your membership. Also included will be a beach volleyball court, provided Johnston County does not force parking in the area now home to the pitching cages. More parking will be added in front of the building, which will bring total parking spaces to 61. Sluggers will also be adding a Smoothie bar complete with supplements for those utilizing the fitness equipment. For those not wanting supplements, well, smoothies are just tasty. One other aspect of great importance to the inaugural board of directors is creating a year-round pool. We can do this by adding a seasonal, removable, inflatable cover. To do this, however, our goal is to finance as little as possible of the start-up expenses. Provided we do this, we should be able to save enough money to cover the pool within 2-4 years. Now, for the important part: what’s it going to cost? There will be a one-time membership fee of $850, with a $100 discount for anyone who pays prior to September 30, 2007. After this date, the fee will be $850. Each member (member defined as a family, those in the same household, sharing living expenses, related by blood or marriage) will hold equity in this fee, meaning that should there be a waiting list if and when you choose to sell your membership, you will get most or all of this fee back. For a good example to explain the cost, consider it as 300 families pooling their money to build a really nice pool. 300 X $750 is $225,000. The pool should cost approximately $300,000, so there will most likely be a fairly small loan to the non-profit, but not large enough to keep us from covering it within 2-4 years. The annual dues are anticipated to be $400, with a slight increase when the pool goes year-round in order to cover electrical expenses and, most likely, a full-time employee. The annual dues will be due each year by April 15. Don Wells, of Mast, Schulz, Mast, Mills, Johnson, and Wells, has agreed to be our legal representation as well as the President of our inaugural board. He is currently working on the lease contract between CAC and Sluggers, as well as the membership contract and by-laws. We should be ready by mid-August to send the contract and by-laws to everyone who has reserved their membership. We politely ask that only those certain of their desire to be members return the membership application. We will number the applications as they arrive and will continue to number them after we get to 300, but only the first 300 will receive the contract and by-laws. After September 30, we will contact those who haven’t returned payment and continue contacting those numbered after 300 until we reach capacity. Those interested parties not included in the first 300 will be placed on a waiting list. I feel I have been overly explanatory, but I’m sure you may still have questions. If so, please don’t hesitate to contact me. We have a seven member inaugural board of directors, but I have obviously agreed to be the contact person for questions and returned membership applications. There is also a preliminary site plan posted at Sluggers should you want to see what you are paying for. Thank you for your time. Just curious, so you have the one time membership fee AND then an additional $400 due anually each year? Did I read that correctly? And is this still good for no matter how many people are in the family household? Trying to get all the facts. Thanks. STephanie
I understood it to be the ONE TIME Join Fee (Membership Fee) then the yearly fee. That is how most membership pool clubs work. - Kel
If that is so then what is the advantage of joining before it is even built unless they think the waiting list is going to be so long they believe advance joining is a necessity?
I was told there will be a limited number of memberships. I think around 300. The expectation is that there will be a waiting list like the pool in Desert Pines subdivision.
NCMom- I think you are correct. The McGees Swim Club/Membership Pool at Desert Pines is 'sold out' with a 2 plus year waiting list (Or so I was told). There are only a limited number of "Shares" (Family memberships) at McGees. and Did anyone read the N&O article today (Monday) on how popular swim teams/meets are in the greater triangle area. A year round pool would be ---so--- great! Let's Swim!!!
"Believe" would be a little vain; "hope" is more like it. The advantages are twofold. One, you would save $100 if you commit and pay before September 30, 2007. Secondly, yes, we hope we have sold out of memberships. That is our goal. For anyone who is a member, it will be there goal as well. Should any member ever choose to sell there membership, a waiting list would be necessary in order to sell their membership to someone else and recoup their initial membership fee. Also, as we are maintaining a goal of covering the pool within 2-4 years, we'd like to carry as little debt as possible in order to make that happen. To clear up the confusion on the fees, I will first apologize for not explaining it well the first time. In the first year, you will pay the membership fee and the annual dues. The membership fee is going toward the construction of the pool, the annual fees are for annual expenses, which we would obviously have in 2008. In subsequent years, the membership fees will obviously not be going toward construction, but they would be assessed to any new member to either offset debt, increase a capital improvement fund, or hopefully to simply pay an existing member who has chosen to sell their membership. The latter would obviously happen if there is a waiting list. Another question you guys had was about your family. When you read the word member, add the word family before it. A member is a family, living in the same household, sharing expenses, and related by blood or marriage. For example, a husband, wife, and 2.4 kids is one member. As for the mention of the pool in Desert Pines, our belief that we will sell out memberships stems from this pool. I'll be 30 this year. They have had a waiting list since I was 5. Let me know if you guys have any more questions. I'll check back tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll post my email address again for anyone interested in the membership application. Thanks, Denton Lee III Sluggers dlee3@nc.rr.com
Thanks Denton for clearing that up - another question - will there be times set aside for adults swimming for exercise without the kids? Also, what will the hours available be? TIA
I actually get that question often, and to be honest, I am simply compiling all of these questions for our next board meeting. If this is a desire of so many people, we'll make it work. In saying that, we still have a lot of work to do. I have compiled a list of at least 20 questions that I simply don't know the answer to yet. My task so far has been the basics. I am busting my rump to make this a reality, but I am not dumb enough yet to take on answering every question on my own. With potentially 300 members, there has to be a board of directors, which is why, in addition to the increased liability, that I am leasing land to this non-profit for the pool. The pool is my idea and I am doing all the work to get it started, but after that point, the appointed board will make all the decisions for the day-to-day operations. I will be present at board meetings, but I will not be an officer. We have discussed traditional hours, i.e. Monday thru Saturday 10-9, Sunday 1-9, but again, we may decide to open earlier for whatever reason, including allotted times for adult only swimming. Sorry for not really answering your question, but I don't want 300 members yelling only at me if they so desired. Denton
i know where you are coming from:lol: i do appreciate your response and hope the board will consider an adult only time for those that want to exercise or keep in shape. Emailed ya:-D
I went by Sluggers tonight & saw the Pool map & drawing. All I can say is WOW! It's going to be so COOL!
Does anyone know when they will begin construction? I believe it has been approved by the county per Denton but I was just curious when it is going to get started.
