Cloth Stores?

My grandmother made me a quilt years ago. I've looked at lots of sets to decorate our coming baby's nursery, but I haven't found anything I like better than the quilt yet. I went to Linens&Things, Target & Kohls last night to see if I saw any bed skirts, sheets or curtains that really matched the quilt. Unfortunately the greens & pinks in the quilt just didn't match anything I saw in the stores. I got a sewing maching recently and thought it might be fun to try to sew a bedskirt & curtains for baby girls nursery if I couldn't find any pre-made sets. I've never really been shopping for cloth (other than once at a store that was going out of business and a couple of times at Walmart). Where do you shop locally for your cloth?

When I get the unusual urge to sew I go to Walmart for fabric and patterns.

could try JoAnns Fabrics on Walnut St. in Cary. It's in the same shopping center where BJ's, World Market and PetsMart are. (across from the Crossroads Shopping Plaza)

Walmart has a good selection of fabrics and sewing supplies, but getting help from someone who knows what they're talking about is kind of hit or miss. Some of the people who work there are knowledgeable and helpful, others can barely read a yardstick to cut your fabric.

If you're looking for something special to go with a quilt, try the Whistle Stop Quilt Shop in Selma. http://whistlestopquiltshop.com/
They have a lot of fabric and supplies, and knowledgeable help. You might find just the thing there to make a bedskirt and accessories to go with the quilt you have. Good luck!

Thanks for the info :) Just FYI, I was in the fabric portion of Walmart the other day and bought a couple of samples to take home to see how they matched. I asked the woman working in the fabric department if they kept that particular cloth in stock. She said that in the next month or so, the Fabric portion of the Fuquay Walmart would be going away.

I had not heard that, I'm disappointed. I have bought fabric at several different Walmart stores. Around here, I think the one in Clayton has the best selection. I think they're about the same distance from here. Where I live, it seems like everything is 12-15 miles away.:?

If you go to Selma, bring your quilt with you, so you can get harmonizing fabrics and not have to make an extra trip.

Mill Factory Outlet on Capital has a GREAT selection....all the fabric is grouped by colors. It's worth a ride out!

There is an Hancock Fabrics in Raleigh on Wake Forest (I think it is) behind the Melting Pot. Also, Pottery Barn Kids has a lot of solid colored skirts as well, you might find one you like in the store, then check on Ebay...LOL That's what I do! I got my daughter's whole crib set on Ebay for $55, and it sells in the store for about $400. Good luck!!

JoAnn's in Cary has a fantastic selection, and there is also The Cloth Barn in Goldsboro. They are worth the trip!

I'll second the JoAnn's and Hancock. I've been to both, although it was in Fayetteville.

    Great Fabric Store

The best fabric store around that actually specializes in fabric for kids is Mill Outlet Village on Capital Blvd. You go up past the new mall and 540 and it's a few miles on the right. Great store! I have 2 friends that have bought fabric from there to make crib sets for their babies, one a girl and one a boy! Great selection!

All fabric sections will be going away.
If we have to go to another city we are taking money out of our community.
    Think of it this way.
You leave one saturday morning you and a friend. You have to drive one way 25 miles you arrive maybe at 10:00am at shop then you shop there and spend an average of $35.00 each. Then it is lunch time and you are hungary. Lets go eat then you spend about $8.00 a person for lunch and then you go shopping at a different store that you could of went to Walmart. Then you spend maybe another $35 each. Then you shop some more. Then you decide you need to go home. On the way you stop for a drink and crackers $2.00 each. You drive home 25 miles.
Ok this is the total coming out of our community going into another community.
One day $219.00 if 10 people did this a month it would be $2190.00 a month now if you did this in one year it would be $26,280.00. Think about this very hard and if you still want to email walmart go for it.
Plus someone will loose a job at Walmart. One person less having a job in there own town because we have to go 25 miles one way.
This hurts my budget a year!!!!!!!!!!
I already have to drive to Raleigh to work so now I will just stay later at night and go shopping there and spend my money.
    Sorry Clayton!!!!!!!
This is why I was glad WalMart came to Clayton so we did not have to go too Raleigh shopping!
I feel sorry for our community and business whom depend on WalMart!

It is fun to make that stuff, especially if this is your first baby. I made stuff for my son's room when he was born (adopted), and for my daughter when we adopted her. I don't have any of it anymore, as I sold it all on ebay (as another member mentioned). I got a pretty penny for it to, for they were both one of a kind.

FYI, what I did was take a 2nd hand set from goodwill, and just recovered the bumpers. All the fabrics were purchased at Wal-Mart because they had a wonderful selection of coordinating prints (usually located on their wall of fabric). I took tension rods and just made 'curtains' for the underside of their cribs. It looked totally designer style, but for a fraction of the cost. That way I was able to make coordinating window treatments, too.

If you need any help on sewing, pls email me privately. Also, there's a sewing course at the community college, cleveland campus this semester.

Wal Mart reply to removing fabric depts

I wrote to Wal-Mart regarding their removal of the fabric depts. Here's their response.. . . . .

Thank you for you recent inquiry regarding the fabric department in your local store. In keeping with our emphasis on being a store of the community, Wal-Mart is converting the fabrics and crafts department in some stores to a newly expanded assortment of merchandise that focuses on life's celebrations. We are thrilled to offer our customers this exciting new crafts and celebrations center that makes available craft and party planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations, such as holidays, weddings and birthdays.

In those stores where the new crafts and celebrations center is placed, merchandise commonly referred to as 'notions' will be included in the product offerings - such as sewing machines, yarn, needles, thread, etc. As a part of this conversion, most of our new and remodeled stores opening in early 2007, as well as a small number of existing stores, will feature the new crafts and celebrations center in place of cut fabrics. Wal-Mart will continue to carry cut fabric in most of our stores. Due to the continued evaluation of our stores, we are unable to share a list of existing stores scheduled to receive the new crafts and celebrations center at this time.

Try Printer's Alley up on Duraleigh near Crabtree Mall. Take your quilt with you and they'll match up fabric and trim! Good luck and Congrats!!
