Does anyone know any thing about this bird. I got custody of it and need some info. I did check out web sites but not the info I needed. Thanks in advance.
I think Rushlow and Kaci are the board bird experts. You might want to PM them if they don't weigh in here soon.
Kaci I dont know the first thing about it. I got custody of her. Can they have fresh fruit? I really need to clean her cage what can I use to clean it? What should I keep out of the cage and what can I put in? What kind of toys can she have if any? I will probably have a lot more too.. Thank you so much Kaci. I need all the help I can get she is a beautiful bird. Oh and how long does it take for her to acclamate to her new surroundings?
Cockatiel help I can help. I have been raising parrots for years, and a Cockatiel is a member of the parrot family. You should clean her cage with a non-toxic cleaner specifically for birds such as Aviclean, Poop-off, or you can use a mild dilution of water and a few drops of dishwashing detergent like Palmolive in a spray bottle. You can offer fruit & veggies to your Cockatiel. However, do not leave fresh food in her cage for more than an hour or two, as bacteria can grow rapidly. Buy a good seed mix. I use 8 In 1 Ecotrition Cockatiel Mix available at Petsmart. Cockatiels like toys with bead, knots, bells. One thing I would like to share with you is that if the bird should begin laying eggs, she will need a source of calcium, such as a cuttlebone. Greens, such as kale, are good to give them. Hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further questions, please ask.
Good advise, don't forget the danger foods, avacodo's and Choc, and onions as well.. no cooking on teflon, and no smoking around the birds either. It takes time for them to get used to their new surroundings, how old is she? Talk to her as well. She will get used to you in time. These are great birds to start with, they are wonderful to have. I have one and he talks and plays just like my bigger ones do. Sheri
and definitely no tomatoes. Easy to remember what kills birds, Chocolate-Avocado-Tomatos:lol: Anything else is pretty open, my birds actually love chicken which seems kinda canabalistic to me but they love it. Give her a lot of talk and play time, they are like children and love socialization. Get several different toys and rotate them in and out of the cage occasionally to keep her from getting bored. If you are gonna let her out of the cage, please please please have her clipped - i cannot tell you how many times i have known of birds escaping through a door never to be seen again and others that actually have flown into a window and broke their neck. There are some great books at the pet store that can help you to understand their way of thinking and behavior devoted just to the little tiels. If she starts plucking her feathers, let us know. As for acclimating, the small birds are a whole lot quicker to do that than the larger parrots, she should be feeling right at home in a week or so. Good luck and feel free to ask anything you need to know and i am sure one of us will have an answer for you.
Thank you guys you are the best. Can she have saltine crackers? I don't know how old she is. I wll have to ask huh? I haven't let her out of the cage yet she is not ready. I do talk to her alot when I'm home. Depending on age is depending if they talk?
Sherry, i have never heard not to cook on teflon - i know you cannot leave the pan burning but my birds are all in my breakfast nook and i cook on my teflon pans all the time and have never (knock on wood) had any problem with their health.
yep crackers are great. When i comes to talking there is really no way to know, some birds do more than others. Cockatiels are really good at mimicking sounds though, we had one that would make you look for your Nextel all the time, had that sound down pat. How is she acting toward you now, is she curious or standoffish?
oh yeah for years that has been out there that it's very dangerous to cook on them, the fumes from the teflon..never chanced it, but I have had several people up north when I lived up there that lost their whole flock using teflon pans...so Sheri is not going to take that chance at all.
I have been around a lot of Teils, and normally males tend to talk more then females..but you never know.
Shes still a little nervous. I can pet her head but when I go inside the cage she goes to the other side.
just be patient with her, maybe leave the door open and let her come out on her own to you at first (if she has been clipped) and talk to her through the cage in whispers so she will come closer to you. If you can pet her already then you are doing great:hurray:
When i talk to her she climbs to the top of the cage and just listens and bird talk back to me. She really is a nice bird.
