Let's start a new thread with this one.

There is also Wake Tech. They have a campus on Hwy 401 between Fuquay and Raleigh, among others. JCC has the Cleveland campus and the Workforce Development Center in Clayton, in addition to the main campus in Smithfield.

Thank you for the information. Does anyone have an opinion as to which is the better college for going back to school after being out for sooooo long? I would like to take some general courses to start out with, then move towards a business degree in a regular college.
It's been so long since I have been in a classroom. Now the boys are older and I figure, why not? Everyone there will probably be in their 20's and I will be the grandma in the front of the room. *laughing* I am 39.

Anyone have experience in "going back to school after being out so long".

You should not worry about your age in reference to going back to school. If this is something you really want, then go for it. College is so much different. You do not seemed to be judged as much and either of the community colleges you choose are excellent. What program of study are you aiming toward?

I started college at age 30 and graduated at 40 from JCC. I was working full time and taking classes at night. Currently I am in fulltime Nursing school in Durham hoping to graduate in May with my RN. Its not easy and the ole brain doesn't retain stuff like it used to but....i love what I am doing. You are never too old to go back to school, i'd start off with some fun courses...i love history and biology and then go from there. The counselors at JCC or any college are great with adult learners and can provide excellent guidance.

    You go, rntobe!

I was also a "geriatric student." When I went back to school, I started at NCSU in the Lifelong Education program. After a couple of semesters, I enrolled full time and got my B.A. there. I loved it. They made it very easy and it was affordable. (That was back in the 80's; don't know if it's still the same.)

    Go Pack!

You should not feel self-conscious at all. I have been attending JCC for awhile and there are people of all different ages. I even met a lady in her 60's. I think it is great that anyone would want to go back to school, regardless of their age.

i wanted to renew my teaching certificate after having let it lapse while i stayed home with my kids -- i was very very impressed with the teaching staff, and the campus as a whole with JCC -- i had a wonderful experience there -- and was the oldest in 2 of my classes --

I always wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. One day I was at the doctor with my husband, I got really weak and sick feeling watching him get blood taken, so I kind of threw that out the window. I found the comment of "geriatric student" to be funny. Thanks for the encouragement and the laugh everyone. I think I will like it here. I came across a 4042 person, didn't even know this site existed until they talked highly about it.
One more question or do I start a thread on it?
We have around 1000 golf balls that we have collected from a friends dried up pond. It used to be a prestigious(is that spelled right) golf club back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. We found all kinds of balls with all kinds of logo's on them. Old logo's that I know are not in business anymore. Does anyone know anything about this subject. Are those worth any money? The balls with nothing on them, anyone know what used golf balls go for money wise?

    thanks!!

I only have experience with Wake Tech at the main campus as a 2X graduate & previous p/t instructor but even that all ended 8 years ago. Wow, time to go back to school! WTCC is now marketed as "college for the real world" so maybe they are now geared more for the adult student. I was only 24-25 when I graduated and of course the majority of other graduates were younger than I was but there were also some that were older. The night class students were usually in the older group. I have also heard good things about JCC. Good luck to you!

HA! geriatric student!!! I love it...i often say that I am having a senior moment!!! Seriously though, I started nursing school at age 45..and I am not the oldest in my class....

When i first started back to college I was afraid I was going to be the oldest in my class....ya know...so what!! I am able to bring life experiences to share with others and...I had a 70yo women in alot of my classes and she was having a great time. She brought a whole new perspective to History!

I know personally that JCC is great with older students and I have heard that Wake Tech is too...remember many people are going back to school..(or just starting) and we each bring something valuable to class.

    Go for it!!!

No doubt that life experience is a plus. I was so clueless the first time aroumd as an undergrad. I wasn't a whole lot older than my peers when I went back, but having some experience with life other than being a student made a huge difference. I'm thinking of going back to school when I retire to study history, just for fun.
