Anyone know ANYTHING to help soothe a cough besides medicine? DS has a horrible cough and we have tried Delsym and now I am making tea with honey but anyone have any other ideas that a 9 yr old would be willing to try?? He is so miserable and the doctor would not give him any of the strong stuff.

No, my dad used that before he passed but they got rid of all that. I am about to try some Vicks on his chest.

Warm up some Dr. Pepper to where its almost boiling, but not quite. I also have some homeopathic stuff you are welcome to try. PM if interested.

vicks on his chest with a warm towel tucked up under his shirt to hold it close, my Mom used that on me as a child. Also, caffeine constricts the blood vessels, so some coke or something might help too.

Is his cough loose or tight?

Do you know the cause of the cough? Could it be pollen/allergy related? I get a terrbile cough some times when the allergies realy kick in. I've learned keeping my nose stuffiness/drainage under control can make a heap of difference. Perhaps some OTC allergy med (generic claritin) is worth a try.

Mucinex also helps dry up the mucus that causes coughs. Our dr suggested it and I got the generic brand and it did help, not instantly of course....... but within a few days.

Mom's doc mentioned mixing 1 oz whiskey, honey and lemon. It worked for her.

Man, Delsym has always worked for us here! My doc last week did tell me to get some mucinex, I picked up the CVS brand and it worked within the second time I took it (it's every 4 hours).

He has been sick with the "flu-like" virus going around and we went back to the doctor because he still has a fever and cough and no energy. The doc found no sounds in his chest to indicate bronchitis or pneumonia so he said it was a sinus infection and gave him antibiotics. He did not want to give him the strong cough meds because not coughing causes it to go down into your chest apparently. But when the kid can't sleep and can't figure out how to cough it up, what do you do? Maybe I will try the Mucinex. I gave him tea with honey last night and put Vicks on his chest and feet before bed. I think he rested a little better than the previous few nights so maybe it helped some. Thanks for all the good advice!!

When he goes to sleep at night, prop up the bottom of his bed. This will cause chest secretions to follow the line of gravity as he sleeps, and move up to be coughed up, rather than settle in the lower lungs.

Don't laugh, but I read that if you put Vicks on the BOTTOM of the feet right before they go to bed, the cough will not bother them. Also, two (2) Tablespoons of honey before bed works for my family, most of the time.

Yikes! The high dose antibiotics have already made his teeth brown and dingy looking! Does that go away?? We just spent $$$$ on braces to get those things looking top-notch! UGH!!
