If you had a choice between having the county offices open as is, 8-5 Mon thru Fri, or four ten hour days, say Tues thru Friday, which would you prefer? I know htat the courts and clerks office would be open Mon-Fri, it seems to me that others could be changed to a 4 x 10 time frame.

    HG,
Although I like the Friday off idea, if they are opened on Monday, we'd have to pay holiday pay for Monday holidays, hence my Tues-Frid idea.

But they get holiday pay now, would you take that away from them?

Where I used to live, we had some offices that were Tues-Sat so you go on a weekend if you needed to. That worked well.

    KD,
Not sure about you, but unless I'm on vacation, I don't get paid if I'm not at work.
In my example,(poorly illustrated, I'll admit), except for the courts, the sheriffs office, etc, I'd close most county offices on Mondays. If a Monday holiday occurred, since they weren't working anyway, they don't get paid for it. Not sure if they get paid for the holiday now, but I don't , if I'm not at work.

Tues thru Friday you could stagger the staff, so the offices could be open from 6 am until 8 or 10 pm, giving those people who work away from Smithfield the chance to get there, and get their business done, without having to leave work early, or else drive like a bat outta You know where to get to the offices.

I agree that this plan needs some serious refining.

Actually, I'm retired, but I was self-employed, so no, I did not get paid if I didn't work. However, my staff got paid holidays as well as vacation time. They did not work Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, etc., but they did get paid for those days. I'm certain state employees get paid for a number of holidays each year, and they do not work on those days. I think most employment packages include paid holidays. It sounds like your plan would take that away.
