This is an educational question. I know some of you on here know a bit about education and just need clarification. OHI is other health impaired. LD is learning disabled. If you have a child w/ one classification, what is the purpose of labelling w/ another IF the services don't change? Just curious as this is what the school wants to do & somehow, some way, there has to be a motive or reason behind it. Can someone explain? Middle school level. Thanks. Stephanie--mom to 7
Here is a link with some claification about OHI http://ww2.rochester.k12.mn.us/region10/Staff___Specialists/ohd/ohd.htm Basically the label the child receives is suppose to reflect the primary impairment. The school may be thinking LD is not the primary factor influencing the child's progress. It is often also used when a child has multiple impairments and not one imparticular that stands out as primary.
You probably already know about thsi resource but it might be worth a call there to ask what they see as the differences between OHI and LD. Parent Training & Information (PTI) http://www.ecac-parentcenter.org/education/pti.htm
Thanks NCmom. Knew about the ECAC already. I know what the labels mean. I was more interested in why they'd want to tack on another one if the services would not change a bit. Found out from another parent exactly what the reasoning is. The school receives funding for each "label" on a student. I had no idea. Amazing the things they don't tell you in the meeting. Thanks for responding though. Stephanie--mom to 7
If a child is identified as SLD, it is in a specific area and that is the only area in which they should receive services according to the law. If a child is identified as OHI, this covers everything in his/her life basically because this particular health impairment has been found to hinder his/her education.
