I'm shopping for a new dishwasher. I do not need fancy features BUT am looking for one that is much quieter than the one we have. In a split bedroom house with kitchen and living room in the center the loud diswasher is such a nusiance. I wish I could test models in the store. I have found a Kenmore with "quiet shield" and wonder how quiet it is. Does anyone have one (Kenmore) or can relay what dishwasher you've been satisfied with?

We have had a new Kenmore with the quiet shield feature for about a year now and absolutely LOVE it! Our old dishwasher was so noisy you could not run it and sit in the kitchen and hear the TV, but our new Kenmore is great! And it cleans everything so much better than the one we had!

We have a new GE & it is also quiet... BUT even though it is in the same size hole under the cabinets the Dishwasher holds much LESS. I am still surprised at how much LESS it holds. It does a great job & I use the delay start timer almost every time but it is SMALLER then the GE it replaced.

Get a dishwasher with two spinners (I'm not sure what's the name of it, but it's a part that spin the water around) instead of one spinner. Two spinners does a better job cleaning dishes throughly than one spinner type model. The two spinners are located one on the bottom and one on the ceiling.

They are called impellers. It really doesnt matter how many you have unless you tend to overload, or incorrectly load the dishwasher. Get yourself a cheap one and save your $$$.

The "quiet" ones just have more insulation on them, but really how often do you run it and need it to be super quiet ?

Just had to go looking for a dishwasher this weekend and we
we chose Lowes because of the installation specials. We decided
on a Whirlpool Quiet II with silverware rack in the door. They are
    offering two specials on dishwashers.
    1. buy any dishwasher (297 and up) and get a 50 dollar Lowes gift card
    by mail.
    2. Buy any Frigidaire dishwasher and installation is free.

With delivery, installation, removal of old appliance, testing the new
appliance, it came out to $489.00

They just don't make appliances like they used to, but we have had
good service from Whirlpool or Maytag.

Hope this helps in your decision!!!

    Happy New Year Everybody!!!!

I don't know if they have the same install guys as they did in '04, but if they do, they're idiots. Watch em carefully.

Quiets is important! Due to the layout of our house the diswasher is a disruption unless we turn it on when we go to bed ... which is when we usually do. Even then we can hear it in our bedroom with the door closed. So quiet-er is necessary.

About a year ago, we bought a Kenmore with Quietguard 5. If I remember right the "5" was a level of quietness. we are very happy with it. Our model has been discontinued though. All the dishwashers we looked at claimed to be quiet. i recommend that you do what we did. go to a bookstore or library and find the latest Consumer Reports that cover dishwashers. They rate them of many attributes, including how quiet they are.

We recently had a "Maytag" repair man tell us that the quality, since they were acquired recently, is no longer there. When our Maytag washing machine's transmission froze a couple of months ago he recommended we buy a Whirlpool, we did and are happy.

Guess I'll know when these break.
We've had the washer & dryer for ... about 10 years now.
Fridge and other appliances are only 3-4 years old.

Washer for 8 years, my in-laws washer just died last week after 12 years (they are also going Whirlpool this time).

All the Maytag dryers are still going strong (8 and 12 years respectively)

My mother still uses her Kenmoore dryer from 1973.

I've been looking for a new DW too. Per Consumer Reports online, the Kenmore 160x and 170x series are the best of the "Best Buys" - between $400 and $520 (rated excellent for noise level too). However, the Sears site does not show any of these models, so I assume they have been discontinued. I'd like to get the replacement model, but nothing on the site indicates which new models are the replacements. So still looking.

After 1.5 years, we had to replace the crappy one (along with all the other shoddy stuff) that SWB Builders put into the house. The new one is so quiet I can stand beside it and not hear it. It is a Maytag quiet series 300. It was in the $500 range.
