here have pet insurance, if so who do you have it thru and what is the cost, does it go up with the age of your pet, can you use any vet? Just got a new puppy and was wondering if its worth getting?
one of my neighbors did when she got her new puppy a few years back and after awhile she decided it was a big waste of money but i have never done it myself so that is just heresay i guess.
that is kind of what I am thinking, I guess unless your pup got really sick its mainly just yearly well visits and shots... just curious as to what others think thanks
I've heard that it's only good for a big emergency. and of course you can't plan for that so its really just a gamble. If you have a breed that is prone to illness or a chronic medical condition (i.e. cocker spaniels and their ear infections and poss. back problems) then I would consider it a little bit more.
What would be nice is if it was set up like our health insurance. A little bit taken out of each pay check so we wouldn't notice and have it go towards check ups and such and the yearly shots. I use to have a vet in Delaware and one in Florida that would give me a 10% discount if I brought in multiple pets
I have Banfield's insurance program. I have a 2.5 year old and a 1 year old dog, and the only thing I've paid out of pocket is the medicine for each of them required - twice for one of them and just once for the other, but I did get a discount because I had the plan. Their spay/neuter was also covered. I haven't paid a cent at the office for routine tests or vaccines. The paperwork you get everytime you go says how much each item was and gives a total saved amount. I figured even if I come out flush, it's easier to pay it out monthly than all at once. There are different levels of plans - around 20-25/month - and you can cancel or renew annually. (There are provisions for cancelling earlier than that, but I don't know what they are.) The plan has worked for me.....
We looked into it knowing english bullies are prone to some serious health problems as they get older. Let's just say the pet insurance companies figured this out a long time ago:lol: Our quote to cover an english bully was more than our own insurance costs us a month!! So breed definitely plays a part in the premium expenses.
I am pro insurance! I used to have VPI when I had one pup but couldn't afford to add the second one, so I canceled it. Didn't think it was fair to insure just one. Crazy I know. We thought it was worth it for our 1st pup. We had to pay up front but then we would have doctor sign form and get paid back when after we mailed it in. 1st con of insurance you got to remeber to mail it. But we didn't have to pay to fix pup. turns out pup had lots of skin issues and that ment lots of $$$, so it helped having insurance for him. Looking back wished I had keep it cause at 8 years old, he had a couple of surgery for lump removal. All in all I think it great if you get in from the puppy stage. Neever heard anyone who tried it say it was bad. Although, if you are good at saving money you could also just put in a money marketing account, but you could also do that with human health insurance.
Here is an article about pet insurance and the pros and cons that go with it. Plus, there is a link to some money saving tips for vet care. http://www.consumerreports.org/pets/0307vet2.html
Do you have to ask? We have 4 cats we take there once a year, plus whenever they are sick, or other problems, we never had a discount. Don't get me wrong, what we pay is well worth it because we are very happy with the service we get, but it would always be nice to save a few bucks. As for insurance we never got it. 2 of our cats have had about 4k worth of problems. Not sure if it would have helped or not. Don't know if it covers medication? If it does might be worth it, one of our cats takes about $100 bucks a month in medication. We sure do treat our cats like another one of the family. 8)
it should be automatic but I would definetly ask. You will see an item on your bill that states, "multiple pet discount".
