Does he need to see a doctor?

So my 5 yo was at a daycare today, and apparently another kid hit him in the eye. I can't get much info out of him, and his older brother didn't see it happen. So I'm not sure if he hit him with his hand or toy, but think it was his hand. Anyway, I didn't find out until after we got home, so I haven't asked them there yet...but the point of the story is: he keeps complaining every 20 minutes or so that his eye hurts really bad. He cries for about a minute, then he's fine and goes on like it's nothing. Do you think he needs to see a doctor? I'm just worried maybe his eye is scratched or something?

When my oldest was in preschool years ago, a plastic lid accidentally scratched his eye. They didn't even call me about it at the time because he was fine, but told me when I picked him up. He was fine when I got him, but after we got home he started crying really bad saying it hurt him. I took him to urgent care and sure enough, a scratched (is it a cornea, I can't remember the eyeball parts!). They had to put some eyedrops in it to seal it up then he was fine. But he was hysterical at the time, and wouldn't stop crying so I knew something was very wrong...Guess if he's still upset I'll take him to urgent care here at 40/42 in the AM.

Can you see any irritation? Is it watering or anything? Poor kid!!

The only time it seems to water is when he starts crying that it hurts. It does seem to be a little pink, but again the only time I've looked at it is when he starts crying, and he's holding his hand over it. Then he won't open it for me to look in it...he's very stubborn that way! He's also saying his head hurts, but he's been coughing, and I think he's allergic to the guinea pig we just got, so I"m thinking that's the cause of that...:?

A scratch on the cornea will hurt very badly and should be checked out by your doctor.

yes it is, but as someone who has had it happen, if he can open his eye then chances are it is not scratched. When mine was scratched, actually twice from contacts, it was a pain that was unbearable and i was a grown woman, the eye lid would not open at all from the irritation. Me personally, i would wait till tomorrow am and see how it is doing. If he keeps saying it hurts, put some ice inside a washrag and have him hold it on the eye, if it really is a problem that will sooth it, if not, then he will not want the ice. JMHO

Take him to urgent care up at 40/42. They'll look at it w/ the special light and let you know if you'd need to further take him to an opthalmologist. I wouldn't worry. Could be scratched and that will hurt like the dickens. But, easily taken care of. He'll probably need some drops. Actually I probably have some here--LOL. Not kidding. Seriously though, don't play around w/ the eyes. I'd worry if the headaches just started but since you said he's been having them, doubt they are related to the recent incident. Better safe than sorry is the motto at this house.

Let us know how it goes. do NOT put the visine in though.--sure you know this any how but thought I'd mention it. It will constrict the blood vessels. Just some wetting drops. Good luck and let us know how he's doing. Best thing is for him to keep it closed and leave it alone for a bit. Easier said than done for a 5yo. Hope he gets well soon.

I would definitly take him to the eye dr to make sure the cornea's not scratched or something else going on. Even if it feels better to him this morning - I would still get it checked out - you don't want to mess with your eyes!

When he woke up he announced that he feels better. I didn't bring it up, just in case he had forgotten about it...He's been at the babysitters all day, I asked her and she said he's been fine all day.
