Can anyone recommend a local person who can do a small drywall repair and some painting?

How big of a small job are you talking? Could it be completed easily in an afternoon or so? (Minus paint)
Are you in a hurry to get it painted, or can it sit for a week.
    I might know someone

It's due to the fact that there has been an uptick in the construction market. Since last summer it has gone from not knowing where your next job is coming from to having so many jobs stacked up you can afford to skip the low profit jobs.

I have seen 2 instances where big name contractors have defaulted on contracts to chase bigger work and still make big money.

I figured the original poster was looking for a handyman more than a drywall contractor. You guys are right, no big contractor would waste their time on a small, one and done job in the current market. Thanks
