Ex-Employee Charged In Theft of $675,037
A former employee at PCX Corporation in Clayton has been indicted by a Grand Jury following an investigation by the SBI and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Karen Lynne Thornton, 38, of Red Hill Church Road, Dunn was named in a True Bill of Indictment last week. Thornton was reportedly in charge of paying bills at PCX, located on Pony Farm Road, off US70. While she was absent from work, due to medical problems, in September 2009, a manager reportedly discovered Thornton had been using a company credit card to pay her personal bills. Altogether, Thornton is accused of stealing $675,037 from the business since 2004.
The indictment alleges Thornton converted $80,539 to her own use between March 17 and December 31, 2004. Between Feb. 1 and Nov. 28, 2005 an additional $107,025 was reportedly converted by using a checking account to pay the balance of a company credit card used to pay for her personal purchases and bills. In 2006, an additional $157,861 was reportedly stolen by Thornton. In 2007, $156,988 was stolen from PCX. In 2008, $82,707 was discovered missing. In 2009, another $89,917 in funds was defrauded from the company, according to copies of the indictments obtained by WTSB. According to an official in the Johnston County Jail, Thornton was released from custody on Sept. 10 on a $20,000 property bond. WTSB News has learned Thornton is being represented by Smithfield attorney Jack O’Hale.

According to the PCX Corporation website, the company engineers custom pre-fabricated electrical products for large commercial businesses, including electrical distribution products, power supplies, and data centers.
