I noticed a huge "For Sale" sign in front of Family Garden Center on Amelia Avenue - are they closing or what? We were there to buy garden supplies and the employees are extremely friendly.
I don't think they're closing. They just moved a bunch of stuff around in the store and put in a bunch of racks to hold feed. I saw them talking to some guy from Mass. about business. Damn yankees! /Ted Nugent's always stirring up trouble.
Last time they had the For Sale sign out front I asked, they are looking to sell part of their space, they were not closing. I don't know if they may have changed since I asked a few months ago or not. They just felt they had more space than they needed for what they're selling and could possibly sell a portion of their space to another individual wanting to run a "related" business, but not competing.
I didn't ask them about it, as I didn't realize it until I got out of the store and drove next to the "for sale" sign. Next time I visit there, I will ask them. Yeah, you're right - I think they don't need that many spaces in the store.
For sale $1,950,000 http://www.trianglecpe.com/pflaherty/propertyView.cfm?PID=6108 Not sure if that is for the building or building & business.
wow.. maybe since they weren't able to just sell or rent a portion of their space this is "plan B" - sell it all.
Family Home and Garden did have 4 locations one in Clayton, one at the Farmer's Market, one in Cary, and one in Raleigh over near the state surplus lot. I worked for the one at the Farmer's market a little over 3 years ago. That location is closed now. They have been trying to sell the one in Clayton for at least a year. When I worked for them they were struggling to keep the business afloat then with poor management and lots of unpaid bills. We would have credit collectors calling all the time and were not able to order new products from suppliers due to unpaid bills. This is a family run business and wasn't necessarily a bad company to work for, there just wasn't any managment/business skills to be found. I hated to see them fold. I think they are now trying to sell off as much of the assets as possible just to keep the other two stores open.
That's sad. I wonder if they are considering to operate "internet" home and garden business? This will bring more customers via online from all over the country and save their business.
