back in clayton we fed bluebirds, hummers, and goldfinches, are there people interested in sharing birding tips with me? I would like to attract orioles, and grosebeaks if possible I had a pair of indigo buntings last year and was thrilled because never saw one before they are sooo brite! I am new to this and would love to get advice tips on what birds are in this area from those who share this intrest! Looking forward to hearing from yall!
I personally have not seen an oriole at my feeders. Right now during the winter I just keep a supply of sunflower seeds because there are not alot of song birds around. I usually see bluebirds, humming birds, gold finches, wrenns, jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, and squirrels. I'm still new to bird feeding also. Have you checked out WildBirds Unlimited they are very helpful in there. Right now I am looking for a camera with a 10X zoom so that I can take better pictures. I am also looking for an identification book so that I can just match the bird with the picture.
There are a lot of different bird guides available. I think Peterson's is one of the easiest to use. http://www.amazon.com/Field-Guide-E...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232025723&sr=1-2
Don't forget to keep the bird bath filled with fresh, clean water. In the winter if it freezes a thin layer on top I break up the ice; if it freezes more solidly, I pour hot water in until the ice is melted. Access to fresh water is important year round.
Thanks for the suggestion on the book. I was looking for a book specifically for birds of the eastern US. Someone else suggested that I get the Sibley guide to birds. I will compare the two.
Sibley is good too. Here's another, specific to the Carolinas: http://www.amazon.com/Birds-Carolin...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232026510&sr=1-1 That one has a lot more information about the birds including nesting habits, feeding habits, etc., but it helps a lot to already know what the bird is. I use Peterson's for identification and then Potter for more information.
