Fitness Center - looking for input

I am trying to find information on some of our local fitness centers.

I am not interested in Curves - I want a full fitness center.

I would like to find a place that has early morning and late evening hours so that I don't feel like I am taking time away from my kids - my full-time job does enough of that.

Looking for whatever personal opinions/input you can offer.

    Thanks!

I enjoy Body Contours. This is for women only. It has a curves type section, but then it also has other weight machines and free weights plus treadmills and elipticals. There are also aerobic classes. The best for me is the free child care!!! I think the hours are reasonable. They are open until 9 I think, not sure what time they open. Hope this helps.

There was just a thread about this topic last week. Had some good information. Did you do a search?

I like Clayton Fitness. They open at 4:15am M-F and stay open until 10pm on M-Th. They have a website. www.claytonfitnessonline.com with all of the hours. It's family owned and has something for everybody from seniors to children. They'll let you try a free week- no pressure or strings attached. I've gotten passes for several of my friends and coworkers.

body contours is really goodfor the equipment they offer. they open early around 430 am and close at 9 pm mon through friday. on sat they are only open till around 1pm and sunday
they are open fom 1 pm to 5 pm

The only thing i wish is they would be open till 10 pm during the week and had longer hours on the weekend.

they also offer free day care during certain hours.

    Cost

About how much do these places charge?

Is there a registration fee (or whatever they call the additional money up front)?

Do they require that they debit the fees from your account?

Do you have to sign a contract?

    Thanks.

Is this the place that used to be Planet Fitness? If so, does James Parks own it?

Is Body Contours in the same place Lynn's used to be?

Body Contours is by Baby's Closet.
I did sign a two year contract, and pay $19.99/month. I write a check each month. I think I did pay a registration fee, but don't remember what it was. I chose to pay each month, that forces me to actually go to the gym, in case I got slack. I have chosen to pay an additional $35 this month for unlimited tanning. This is the only place that I can tan, b/c I need the child care.

Yep, Dana is the owner now and she is awesome. You do have to sign a contract but there was no money up front and they have a special thing that if you and a friend sign up at the same time it is only $19.99 per month for one year.

    Jennifer's Review of Local Gyms

Okay, so last night, I went to all three local gyms.

Curves is about $40 to sign up, and $40 a month. No childcare, and it's circuit training only. So this is a no-go for me

Fit for Life is about $50 to sign up, and about $30-$40 a month depending on the length of contract. They do have limited childcare hours available. The biggest problem I saw there was that, well to be honest, there was not one fat person in that gym. I asked the owner if they had larger people to work out there, and he said there were some and that he didn't think I'd be uncomfortable. I disagree. All these folks were buff, and I am surely not.

Body Contours is $50 to sign up, and about $27 a month. They also have childcare, but only till 7:30 in the evening. Well, heck it would probably be 7 before I could get there. Also, to be honest, and maybe it was because the owner wasn't there, but I did not get a real warm fuzzy feeling about that place. Maybe it's because the teenage girl showing me around talked so fast that I didn't understand half of what she said? Maybe it was the two teenagers sitting outside on the bench stargazing at each other like they were in mid-kiss before I walked up, or maybe it was because the girl in the daycare didn't look much older than Mini Me?

I don't know. I was really excited about Body Countours before I went. Now I don't know what I want to do!

Anyone else have any input or suggestions?

Check the coupon clipper for Body Contours.......May save you a little money if you want to give them a shot.

I could charge you to use my gym, at least someone would get some use out of it!

Super nice of you to check it all out Jenn and post the findings. Everyone surely knows they can rest assured that your first impressions would be very well founded and formed!

As for alternate ideas, I can sell ya a treadmill on the cheap!

    Hey Jen,

I worked out at Body Contours a couple years ago and Dana is very nice, the equipment is kept up and the classes are fun. Dana is an excellent instructor. You probably won't get a warm fuzzy feeling from most gyms - it's the nature of them. Curves folks are very nice but don't offer enough for my needs (no classes, treadmills, elypiticals or free weights).

I suggest you ask Dana if you can do the 3 month summer trial period. I know she has run specials in the Clipper in the past and I bet she would honor the deal even without the coupon. I think it was $99 for 3 months with no other fees. Would be a great way to decide if you want to continue with them long term.

Good luck! I am now working out again and it feels great!

You know, that may be the way to go. I can give it a shot and see if I like it or not.

    Great idea FMO2!
