From Smarter Living website: You're charging me for what?! Airline fees way up http://www.smartertravel.com/travel...lalert&value=2008-05-01+00:00:00&u=SL33E07C89
That 2nd checked bag is a big weight on the airlines. Ticket agents and baggage handlers have to lift that bag. Bad on their backs! Probably demanding increased pay for the extra work. Extra bag causes aircraft to weigh more, therefore more fuel required. Fuel is more expensive these days. Makes sense to me. We only take carry on bags when we fly. There is always a washer and dryer on the other end of our flights.
But $50 extra for one extra bag round trip? That seems excessive even with all the factors you mentioned considered. I was also looking at having to pay $5 - $30 extra for aisle or window. Washer and dryer being an option is different for everyone of course.
Well a tent maker makes my clothing so I use one of the big bags and I can't stand wearing the same clothes/shoes two days in a row, so I usually have two bags (one is documentation that weighs between 10 and 30 pounds) and my clothing bag that averages 49 pounds. As a result of the second bag fee the documentation and brief case now come on board with me and only the clothes are checked. Results of this stupid way to get money - I now take up more of the overhead space. Of course because I fly so much I get to be one of the first boarded, you leisure travelers, by the time you get on there isn't any space so they check your bags. Basically the same weight just more unhappy passengers.
