Dog followed my daughter home when she was out for a run. He was in the new neighborhood close to Shadow Lakes Subdivision. We live in Shadow Lakes. He is staying with us now. Male, not neutered, no collar, a little shy but very friendly. He is mostly orange with white around the neck and legs. Long snout...looks to be part greyhound or whippit breed. Medium to large size. A little thin. We will likely keep him if no owner is found. Just trying to make sure no one is sadly missing him
Is this your dog?? Update....first of all...thanks Hught...I'm guessing you are clapping because the pup will have a home no matter what. So far, seems, Colbie (my daughter has named him) has never had a collar on and is totally resistant to a leash. My daughter bought him a collar today and he was a little freaked but then when we hooked the leash to it and tried to direct him...he sat down and refused to move So, I remembered a Ceasar Milan show or two (love the Dog Whisperer) and I reset the collar high on his neck. He really hated it and I had to be forcefull, but I managed to get him to move. It seemed to scare him. He hid a bit. But then came back out and sat on my feet when all the kids went off to their activities. He LOVES the kids (all 4 of them - 16 down to 8) and is not chewing or going through trash or anything else destructive so far, even though he slept in the house with no constraints last night. I consider that to be a big thing since I know what destruction dogs are capable of. Our other 9yo, lab/beagle mix seems to be accepting him fairly well. Not that he LOVES him, but I think he has accepted him graciously so far. He has retreated behind the sofa sveral times which is new. But, Colbie seems to follow him all the time. I don't know if he is retreating or pouting or both. And then there is our diva...15yo, half Siamese cat...she has given him, among other demonstrations, a piggy back ride with claws included to develop his respect for her. Poor Colbie...but I guess he had to learn... I think he has I wonder...Colbie is not in too bad of shape, he is shy but friendly. I feel that he is young but not a pup. He seems to have never had experience with a collar...much less a leash (that was tough)....But he is not emaciated and he is house trained. He has not had ONE accident since he has been here for 2 days....makes me wonder...did he have an owner....is he a stray...is he a throw away...or is he lost from his owner. I worry that my daughter ...and our other kids...will become attached to him and then his owner will show up. Of course, we would return him to his loving owners...I know I would want the same treatment if we ever lost our sweet doggie. :/
I think that is awesome that you have taken in that sweet animal... I know I would do the same thing....I love my fur babies... I live in Shadow Lakes, so I am always keeping my eyes out for who owns what fur babies, so if I ever see them wandering I know who they belong to...
In all fairness to your family and "Colbie" you should really take him to a vet office to find out if he's microchipped. It is afterall a free service to have that part checked --- if you haven't done that part yet. If you have, then KUDOS to you I understand what you are saying about leash (scared) that may make you wonder but not all families unfortunately walk dogs on leashes anymore. As for the collar issue, he could've gotten out of someone's house after bath and the people didn't put collar back on right away OR any thing could've happened with a previous collar if people had it on him. I always try to remind myself that a stray dog is not unneccesarily an unwanted dog by "its family" .. someone could've been house/dog sitting and dog got away, someone could've found it/transported it further away with intention of keeping & dog got away..... all kind of scenarios. And of course there is the one as you state.. someone "dumped". But at least if you been checking for LOST ads faithfully in all places you could think of and did the MC check then all would've been handled accordingly in trying to be sure this dog isn't loved by someone else.
If you haven't already, you might check the pets section for Craigs List... alot of people look and post there. You could also post a found ad there too with a picture.
Thanks for the great tips. I had not thought of checking for a MC. And I will look at the "lost" ads anywhere I can... He is doing okay...but strike the house trained. Hubby woke up to a HUGE dogpile and pee spot. Since then, we have been sure to walk him in the fence often today. He is smart. Our other dog had figured out how to squeeze through the bottom of the gate so we added a second, lower latch. Colbie sat and worked the latch open
Found a dog I think we have figured out that Colbie is a "smooth haired collie". He is doing well...very smart. I am still searching to see if his owner is missing him. My kids are really becoming attached to him :/ Our other dog has accepted him pretty well. He seems to pout a little though. I wonder how much a dog feels when a new dog comes into the family....any ideas??
