WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Krispy Kreme can add the word "free" to its familiar "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign for at least one day. The Winston-Salem based treat maker is observing National Doughnut Day at its outlets in North Carolina and across the nation by giving each customer one free doughnut of their choice. National Doughnut Day was established in Chicago in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a way to pay homage to the young women who helped soldiers during World War I and World War II with hand-made doughnuts. Dunkin' Donuts is also observing the day, but customers must purchase a beverage to get their free doughnut. The day is observed on the first Friday in June each year. http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/9678194/ :hurray:
Stopped into Dunkin this morning as is my usual Friday thing, ordered my Mocha Iced Latte and 50 count of munchkins, and the guy asked which doughnut I wanted, as it was National Doughnut Day. Love free food.
