Wake County public health officials said Tuesday that they are investigating complaints of illness among people who have eaten at 42nd St. Oyster Bar in downtown Raleigh.

About 40 people have reported getting sick after eating at the popular restaurant on West Jones Street in the past two weeks, said Andre Pierce, Wake County's environmental health and safety director.

Officials are evaluating cases and symptoms, Pierce said, and they ask anyone who has eaten at the restaurant in the last two weeks and later felt ill to call the county health department at 919-856-7400.

I'm betting their oysters came from a closed to shellfish harvesting area.

Unfortunately, one of the adverse effects of water pollution upstream is the pollution downstream in the estuaries. Since oysters are filter feeders, they ingest all the materials in the water, good or bad.

All that brine and salt that was placed on roads finds its way down stream. All the farm fertilizers, industrial runoff, poor septic design and function..it all does downstream. And, lest we think our water supply is good, we are downstream from folks west of us.

Seems that the proposal for selling oysters that have been irradiated to kill bacteria that can affect humans will get some traction.

If you shuck 'em, recycle them.
