Five small-town weekly newspapers in the Triangle – the Apex Herald, the Holly Springs Sun, Garner News, the Cleveland Post and the Fuquay-Varina Independent – will close their doors effective Aug. 1. The closings were confirmed in a news release issued by Civitas Media, the newspapers' owner based in Davidson, near Charlotte. http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2013/07/16/four-triangle-newspapers-to-shut-down.html
This sucks....for everyone involved. Heartland did the same thing several years ago when they let everyone on staff, with the exception of a skeleton crew go. I hate to see the small town paper go, I gave several years of my life to helping make the CP and the GN what it is today.
I can see the Cleveland Post going away. There is barely a town identity to begin with nor is there any basis to really keep it alive. I have no idea what it takes to operate a newspaper, but the level of advertising in there always seems robust. As for the Garner News, it really is a shame. Garner is really beginning to come into it's own and the timing of this news stinks.
