    Giant Pup Rescues Homeless Pals

Raleigh, NC – May 12, 2005 – Gourmutt’s Bakery and Triangle Town Center are partnering for the Petunia Project, a major awareness and fund raising campaign for animal welfare groups. This May through July, Petunia, a 20-foot tall topiary dog fashioned of flowers, will be exhibited in Triangle Town Commons, the outdoor shopping and dining area at North Raleigh’s Triangle Town Center.

Triangle Coalition for Animal Rescue Efforts (T-C.A.R.E.) is a group of (18) participating animal protective organizations located in The Triangle region. Starting May 13, their members and volunteers will be selling a custom produced dog treat generously donated by Gourmutt’s Bakery, a Raleigh-based all natural gourmet bakery for dogs. Each peanut butter treat will cost $1 with 100% of all proceeds being donated to the T-CARE organizations. Treats will also be sold at the Welcome Center at Triangle Town Center during normal shopping hours. T-C.A.R.E. organizations will also conduct pet adoption events at Petunia’s “home” in Triangle Town Commons throughout the summer.

The Petunia Project is inspired by “Puppy”, the 42-foot flowering topiary that welcomes visitors to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The Raleigh version is an amazing combination of sculptural genius, engineering skill and horticultural imagination. It was commissioned in 2004 and is the work of local sculptor Greg Osbeck who, along with a team of as many as 12 assistants worked on building the giant topiary sculpture for more than four weeks.

When finished on May 13, Petunia will weigh over 5,000 pounds, be groomed with more than 32,000 flowers, consume 10 gallons of water a day and shine as a beacon for homeless pets. She will remain on display at Triangle Town Commons for most of the summer, depending on local climate conditions.
