Good luck to the West Johnston football team as they go against Southeast Raleigh tonight for the Greater Neuse conference title.
Update--from the WRAL website. West Johnston will be 'looking in the mirror' in 1st round When the playoff talk began a few weeks ago, West Johnston was undefeated and looking at the No. 1 overall seed in the 4-AA East. But after losing three straight to end the season, the Wildcats fell to third place in their conference, they have the No. 10 seed, and they will travel to No. 7 Apex in the first round of the playoffs. “Things happen like that. We hit a rough stretch there in the last three games," West Johnston head coach Bennett Jones said Sunday afternoon. The rough stretch started with a rain-out on Oct. 24. The game between West Johnston and Knightdale was moved to the following Monday, and the Knights handed West Johnston their first loss of the season, 38-27. <CLIP> Looking ahead to Apex "We've only seen a little bit of tape so far, but it's a lot like looking in the mirror," Jones said of his first round match-up with Apex. Jones compared Apex's running back Kevin Fogg to Frederick, and Apex quarterback Houston Hawley to Morton. The numbers match-up too - at least at the quarterback position. Both quarterbacks have passed for about 2,100-yards this season, but the slight edge goes to Morton. As far as the running backs go, Frederick is among the top performers in the Triangle with almost 1,500-yards on the ground compared to Fogg's nearly 600. Jones knows the numbers don't tell the whole story, though. Fogg has been battling an injury this season, and Jones says he is explosive. "Obviously I know all about Kevin Fogg" Jones said, "He's fast, and he's dangerous." West Johnston has allowed 22-points per game this season, and their offense, which can be very explosive at times, scores an average of 32-points each time out. Apex, on the other hand, scores an average of 26-points per game, and the Cougars allow about 19-points. Regardless of the numbers, Jones expects Friday night to be a true battle. “I know they’re going to be very well coached. Coach [Bob] Wolfe does a very good job with them, but I think its going to be a very good match-up.”
