    Total beginner? Electric?

Yamaha gig pack at Sam Ash. $100 or so.

Guitar, bag, amp, pics, strings included.

Beginner to electric guitar, but not a beginner to a string instrument. I think he will take it seriously and stick with it

I have a Fender at home but i have always preferred the Gibson, especially the Les Paul.

Guitar Center has the Ephiphone Les Paul Special II Electric for $149

Hey Ken, there was a decent used Yamaha FG512II at Sam Ash a few weeks ago. Don't know if they still have it or not.

No need to ask on my account. I'm the one who traded it in. I only mentioned it because you said you had been looking at 12's.
I never used it much and my wife has been wanting to learn so I traded it in on a cedar/hog Takamine for her. Great sounding little guitar (GS430s).

By the way. I have PA gear for sale. PM me if you or someone you know might be interested. Of course, you may have already seen it over at raleighmusic.com.

  7. I would go with the fender for a beginner because its made to be more versitile. The B.C. Rich Guitars are mainly built for Metal so they have the rougher sound to them in my opinion.

I've got a Washburn Lyon that my wife got me for Christmas (my first). It's got a built in tuner and it's under $100 at Target. I like it, just wish I could play it.

Cleo, do you have a budget in mind? A price range would help a bunch.
There's tons of gear out there that doesn't include beginner packs. All kinds of new or used gear (or a combination of both) that would suit your son and make it more enjoyable for him to play and for everyone around to listen to.
Just my opinion. I (and others I'm sure) will be glad to offer up some more options if you could give an idea of what the budget will allow.

Well that usually depends on the player right? I like low action on my strings. Are you just referring to hardware? If so my bad.

Even if it's hardware it's easily replaceable. As long as you know someone who can implement it correctly.

Speaking of which...I always try to peruse the pawn shops for a good deal on a guitar. Well until the other day. They had a Fender squire for $399.00.

    Dude that's just not right.

Over the past few years I've come to the conclusion that this area just doesn't lend itself to great pawn shop scores. Maybe I've just missed them.

    Hey, where's Cleo anyway?

I went down to Walts Guitars in Fuquay and got a nice Johnson guitar for my 13 year old. And Walt is giving him lessons too. Very reasonable and willing to spend as much time with you as it takes to make you happy.
