I love GCAA and would typically not miss an opportunity to participate in a fundraiser, plus we love Halloween and try to go to as many Halloween activities as possible all month, but I've got to say...really?...7-10pm on Halloween night?...for kids under the age of 12? My kids are in bed by 9pm on Saturday night. And who's going to hand out the candy? I wish they'd set this up for Friday night, early on Saturday, or the weekend prior. At least we're close enough to swing by with a donation without staying for the party.

Is the Chamber of Commerce having a party on the 30th at the old school?

And I thought it was earlier. I'll have to find the calendar. Can't always keep my dates straight.

The reason the time is from 7-10 is so kids can go Trick or Treating as usual then come and party with their friends and family. A lot of kids go from house to house collecting candy and then go home shortly after dark with a lot of energy to burn. There will be music, dancing, and most importantly, more treats.

We figured the kids would already be in their costume, so why not have it on Halloween. If you do it on Friday night the parents would have to dress the kids up 2 nights in a row. Also, since the next day is not a school day we figured why not have it until 10. Besides, you can always come and join us for just an hour and still get the kids in bed before 9.

Heritage Center’s Historical “Ghost Walk” On Thursday

Ann Lee Huckenbeck, who will portray a Civil War-era widow who managed to save most of her possessions during the Union Army invasion following the Battle of Bentonville in 1865.

The Heritage Center’s fifth annual “Ghost Walk” on Thursday, Oct. 29 will enable folks to experience a bit of “living history” in Johnston County’s oldest public graveyard. Starting at 7 p.m. and continuing till everyone has been “served,” guides will escort small groups, one at a time, through the grounds of Smithfield’s Riverside Cemetery, encountering “ghosts” along the way who will portray famous Johnstonians buried in the graveyard that dates back to Smithfield’s founding in the late 1700s.

Persons to be portrayed at this year’s event include: Smithfield’s Bicentennial mayor, Bob Wallace (by Wingate Lassiter); Mrs. T.J. Rand, a prominent merchant’s wife who was a victim of the influenza epidemic of 1918 (by Julia McCullers); Frances Mitchener Hastings Gardner, a plantation owner’s wife who escaped the brunt of the Union Army’s invasion after the 1865 Battle of Bentonville (portrayed by Ann Lee Huckenbeck); and Air Force General Edwin Borden Broadhurst, commander of forces in Korea during the Cold War (portrayed by State Rep. Leo Daughtry).

The Walk will also include a tribute to the 1959 Smithfield High School state championship football team, remembering especially the players who are deceased. Returning to the Walk this year will be “Major” William Hastings (portrayed by Chris Johnson) – Confederate sympathizer (and second husband of the aforementioned Frances Mitchener Hastings Gardner) who will greet guests at the historic Hastings House at the end of the evening’s tour. The Ghost Walk begins near the corner of South Second and Church streets beside St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Admission charges are $3 for adults and $2 for students in grades K-12. Preschoolers accompanied by adults will be admitted free of charge. No tickets will be sold in advance, and tours will be offered first-come first-served.

I was referring to an entrance fee. Although I guess I can see how that would be confusing.

It's not confusing at all. Why should an adult have to pay when they are not going to be getting candy & prizes?

    GCAA HALLOWEEN PARTY

We are only charging for the kids because the games and activities are for them. The party is for kids 12 and under so parents or guardians will need to be there anyway.

With the price of admission ($3.00) you get 1 entry for door prize drawings and 5 tickets to play games. Each game or activity requires 1 ticket (except for the Pie Throwing booth).

We will have games such as:

    Halloween Bean Bag Toss
    Witch Hat Ring Toss
    Cake Walks
Pass the Pumpkin (Like hot potatoe)
    Mummy Wrap Race
    Pumpkin Bowling
    Guessing Game
    Bouncing Eyeballs in the Pumpkin
    Pumpkin Crafts
    Picture Taking Booth
    Pie Throwing ($1.00/throw)

You can purchase extra game playing tickets ($1.00 for 3 more game tickets)
You can also buy extra raffle tickets ($1.00 for 5 tickets)

The games will give away CANDY, stickers, and other things for prizes.

Other things that will be given away are Kid's Manicure gift certificates, an Adult Pedicure, movie tickets, a gift certificate for a free birthday cake from Sweet Swirls and other freebies from local restaurants.

The costume contests will begin at 9. There will be several age groups including one for ADULTS who dressed up.

Keep in mind, while we are trying to raise money, the main focus of this party is to provide a fun night for the kids in the community. If we don't raise but $10.00 that's fine, just as long as the kids had a good time and look forward to coming again next year.
