Johnston County will hold it's First Annual Walk to End Alzheimer's at the Smithfield Aquatic Center on October 8th at 8 AM! Did you know Every 69 seconds someone develops Alzheimer's? As many as 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's? Alzheimer's is now the 6th leading cause of death? There are nearly 15 million caregivers of people with Alzheimer's? Alzheimer's cost the nation $183 billion annually? The event began as Memory Walk in 1989 with nine Alzheimer’s Association chapters raising $149,000 with 1,249 participants. In 1993, the Walk went nationwide and raised $4.5 million at 167 sites. Since that time, it has grown to encompass nearly 600 locations and has raised more than $340 million. In 2010, the Association re-branded the event, transitioning the name into an inspiring call to action: Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
