I was working a shift the other night at the USO at RDU. During the shift a young woman came in and dropped off this week's homemade cookies, brownies, and goodies. (In Wake County there are several groups who alternate Tuesdays and drop off homemade goodies for the guys and gals who pass through the USO) The young woman wanted to share a story with us volunteers who happened to be working at the time she came by and she asked us to pass along the story to all the volunteers throughout all the shifts so they would know just how special the USO is to our troops. Here is the story.... In one of the many groups who bake homemade goodies is a 9th grade young lady. She loves to bake and bakes for the USO every chance she can. During this Thanksgiving holiday she and her family were flying up to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with family. She was seated in a row with 2 young Marines from Camp Lejeune who were also heading home for the Thanksgiving holiday to spend it with their families. Once the flight took off the 3 began to chit chat a bit. One of the Marines reached down into his carry on bag and asked the young girl if she'd like a cookie. He pulled out a ziploc bag of homemade cookies he had picked up at the USO (we encourage everyone to take some snacks on the flights with them). Her eyes got big as quarters. Not only were these homemade cookies from the USO but they were from the patch she herself had baked. With lots of emotion she said to the Marine "I know you won't believe what I'm about to say but on my honor it is the truth. I baked those cookies." The Marine looked at her and then looked at the cookies and then ate one. He reached around and gave her a friendly hug and said "These are the best homemade cookies I've ever tasted in my life." The entire flight the 3 sat and talked.

I did....how sweet and rewarding for that little girl! Nice to hear some good news for a change. :lol:

This is just one of the many stories I walk away with when I volunteer at the USO. I could write a book on my own personal experiences through the USO.
