In my quest to find a quality canned dog food that my elderly, sensitive stomach Pomeranian can eat (and one that doesn't give ALL THREE of my dogs nasty diarrhea, like the 1/4 of a can of the expensive Nutro canned did :roll I have resorted to cooking for my dogs. I made a nice batch of homemade dog food last night that I'm mixing in with their Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice dry food, just to give it a little umph, so little miss picky Pom will eat better -- her vet said she is skinny but there was no way I could tell that since she is a little puffball of fur. Anyway, I took 2 pounds of 80/20 hamburger and browned it in a pot. Added beef broth (low sodium), water, and the following pureed veggies (probably about 2 cups or so of each) - sweet potatoes, cauliflower, beets, broccoli. Brought the mixture to a boil and added some egg whites (had some in a carton that needed to be used, otherwise I would have thrown in a whole egg or two.) Added oatmeal until I got it thickened (probably about 4 cups) and cooked it until the oats were soft. Once it was cooked I mixed just enough in with their dry food to moisten the dry thoroughly. They LOVED IT and gobbled their food up with gusto... even picky girl! I was a little afraid that it might upset their stomachs like the commercial canned food did, but so far so good, and they had it for supper last night and for breakfast this morning. I'm guessing I have enough in the frig for a good 5 days. I based my mixture on the "home cooking" recipe I found here http://www.nocans.com/dog-food.html Just wanted to share in case others are looking for a good treat for their dogs. :-D
good dog treats As you may notice from my other postings, I endorse the whole no-corn diet for dogs, but for treats... My dogs love it when we take extra backstrap meat from deer and dry them. Low in fat, high in protein, and if you don't soak it in all that sauce first, not too bad in salt. Good for humans too! We keep them in the fridge for months on end or vacuum seal them since their dried and the dogs love them. You can find lots of recipes for this on the internet.
