Parents Sleep As Pup Chews Off Baby's Toes
Vet Thinks 6-Week-Old Puppy Tried To Nurse

    POSTED: 7:22 am EST December 12, 2006

BOSSIER CITY, La. -- A Louisiana couple is facing negligence charges after a puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes.

They told police they were awakened by their 1-month-old baby's cries on Sunday morning, saw her mangled foot and rushed her to the hospital. But doctors couldn't reattach the toes.

A veterinarian speculates the 6-week-old pit bull puppy might have been trying to nurse.

"She had a severe injury to one foot, with most of the toes missing," Bossier City spokesman Mark Natale told The Shreveport Times. "Patrol officers who responded notified detectives, and after our juvenile detectives unit looked into it, they determined the child, who had been sleeping in a baby carrier next to her parents, had been bitten by the family's pit bull puppy, who appears to have gnawed on the child's foot."

Natale told the newspaper that the parents took a mattress into their living room to watch television and fell asleep. The child was in an infant seat beside them when the pup began chewing on her toes.

"They did not see the dog injuring the child," Natale said.

The animal will be quarantined for 10 days and checked for rabies since it is too young to have had rabies shots. It's unclear what will happen to it after that.

The baby is now in foster care until the case against her parents is settled. Her parents, Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, have been booked for investigation of child desertion and criminal negligence.

If convicted, the parents face a fine of up to $500 and up to six months in prison

I read that too, it is unbelievable they could sleep through that. Any of my children would have cried like banshees, how could they sleep?

Heavy sleeper = baby monitor in normal situations. If the parents were in the same room with the child and puppy...? That isn't asleep. That's called passed out! Nevermind that this puppy was a pit bull terrier. A 1 month old infant child shouldn't be allowed to sleep on or near the floor overnight. To me, it does sound as if the sleep was induced by alcohol or narcotics.

Times like these, I think "Eye for an Eye" applies. Or toe for a toe...

    Irresponsible mofos.

I agree. That's why I had 'nevermind' about the dog, because the mention of the breed is irrelevant. The puppy was just doing what puppies do.

That said, I do not believe in mixing large dogs (which would have been the case) and small kids. Dogs, no matter how cute and loveable, still have a pack instinct and there will exists a risk of aggressiveness against what a dog (especially larger working breeds) may view as a subordinate member of the pack or family, especially if provoked by a child. Handling and dealing with a large dog requires responsibility that should only be given to a older child at the very least. I love dogs (especially German Shepherds) and there's nothing wrong with treating a dog as part of a family, but a big dog is equatable to having a loaded gun in the presence of your 3 year old. Assuming too much can be lethal.

"Woof Woof" says our German Shepherd Dog child.

DH had a 'discussion' with me before DS arrived about what he would not allow from any 4 legged child towards the new baby. Not to fear as our (read MY) 4 legs has been wonderful with our child, but one is a dog and one is a child. I watch them both like a hawk. You cannot be too careful.

Don't forget poodles, they are the most temperamental, evil, snappy dogs in the world. Not good around kids at all.
