You want to make sure the barn you choose is welcoming to beginner children, and geared toward the younger rider. I really believe showing should be a part of the whole experience, if it's done in a healthy manner, and winning is not the goal. Horsemanship should be the main objective. A really good barn will have lots of things to keep the kids interested, while at the same time constantly teaching them. Watch out for the lesson mills that just want your money, and are only interested in the shows.
I know a couple of kids who ride at Promisland Farms, they are active in showing at the Johnston County shows, I believe.

Also, Castle Farm in Knightdale seems to have a good lesson program.

I hope you don't mind if I hop into your topic. I'm looking for beginning ADULT riding lessons, so if anyone out there has any thoughts about that, I'd appreciate it.

What type of riding were you interested in? Are you willing to travel to Raleigh? There are some good adult beginner barns in the area, just need to know your interest.

I have a friend who uses Triple Creek Farms in Benson (off Elevation) for both adult and child and said they get a wonderful lesson! I think it is $25 for group $40 for individual. (or close to that)

My husband and daughters are taking lessons from Elizabeth at Triple Creek Farm. They are really enjoying it. Their lesson is 1.5 hours long (group of three riders) for $25 each. When I was looking it appeared most farms charge $30+ per hour for group lessons. Elizabeth does not own the farm but the people who do are nice Christian folks.

    More info.

Elizabeth has been out of town. I'm not sure if she is back yet or returning some time this week...just so you know in case you do not hear back right away. I know she'll be back by Saturday.

Oh, yes, I forgot about Carol's place. I wasn't sure if they taught, or what they taught. I know they used to have a hunter series out there, but I was never able to go. But my gosh, the barrel series seems to be very successful. That's awesome.

Spikesmom, it would help to know what you wanted to get out of the lessons. There are several different disciplines, even between western and english. There's hunter jumper, dressage, saddleseat, eventing... every instructor is going to be different. Do you want to learn to ride to compete, or just for pleasure?

Special Thanks to Hugh. Yes, Horses. Although.....

I was thinking Western and that's as far as I'd gotten. I've always wanted to learn, but never had the opportunity. Just trail riding, riding for pleasure, that kind of thing. Horses. Thanks!
