Yes it is illegal, and I did it anyway.

We had a fawn get hit by a car. I kept her in my living room all day until I could get an experienced fawn rehabilator to take her.

What an experience, she was so so cute and sweet.

In all actuality, she should have been put back where they found her to let her mom come back, but due to her injuries that was not possible.

But I am in love and would have loved to hand raise her myself... the laws are really sticky there, and since I work for a shelter, I didn't want to end up in trouble.

Anyway, it was a blast and I had to share!!

She just had some minor abrasions and bumps. They wanted us to keep her in captivity to watch for internal stuff.

I felt like a kidnapper. They say the mom will keep looking for her for several days.

I have video of her romping through my living room checking out the baby toys!!

She was less than a week old!! Maybe I found my next calling!! Fawn rehabilitor. Licensing is tough!!

And the pay is squat!

I know what you mean though. When my dad rescued that baby squirrel from his cat's mouth and I took him home, I really wanted to be able to care for him. Instead I got him into the hands of a licensed rehabber in less than 24 hours. Wasn't really up for feeding him every two hours 'round the clock -- and baby squirrels are hard to keep alive! But he was soooooooooo cute! I'll bet the fawn was absolutely precious. :D

You and me both ljk, but seeing an injured critter make it is sometimes worth it's weight in gold. Even though the mom will look for her baby for days and moun loosing it, it is better what you did. The injured fawn would not have been able to keep up with it's mother and may have gotten her injured or killed as well. You had a tough call, but better to save a life, than to risk two.

Wow! you did say yesterday didn't you? As in Wednesday? My daughter had a deer run head on into her car today. His head hit the driver's side window and broke her mirror off. good thing she didn't have her window down or he would have been in her lap.
she said he just kept on running after he hit. mom went back to see where it happened but no sign of him. she still has gook all over her window and fur all around.

EB... you need to move out of the country or your girls may never drive again! Which one did this happen to?

They were riding together but my oldest was driving. We haven't replaced the youngest one's car yet. I'm still debating on that. We did go for a few months without any accidents, though.

Thought I'd share our brush with nature too, although it wasn't nearly as exciting as yours.

So the other day, Mini Me and I pull into the driveway, and I cut off the car. Well, any of you that has been to my house knows we have a little pond right there at the endge of the driveway. When I opened my door, I say this kildeer bird was standing next to my pond going crazy, and I couldn't figure out why. I could also hear another bird, but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Even after I got out of the car, she refused to budge from near the little pond.

So I went inside, and walked into our bedroom to turn the computer on, and looked out the window to check on that little bird, and suddenly I realized why she was having such a coniption fit. Her baby was in my pond, swimming, chirping, and trying to get out!

So I ran out to the garage and got an old fish net (like you use in an aquarium) and we scooped the little bird out. The poor thing was soaking wet, and looked terrible. Just a few minutes passed though and the baby went to the Mama (or Daddy) and hid under it's wing. We went inside to give them a chance to get away, and about 10 minutes later when I looked outside, they were gone.

I just thought that was the neatest thing. That baby was apparently very thirsty and fell right in!

That's a great story! I'll bet the mother bird was thrilled you came to the rescue!
