Ok, I want out of my job I have now..and I have been thinking for the last couple of months that I want to do something that I can enjoy doing..what better thing to do then be around what I love most..animals. I know how to groom Parrots, nails ect. Now I know the basis on the dogs and cats, but I want to know all the rest. I can't afford school and having to go. I have to work a full time job till I know I can afford to leave my current job. I have changed positions at my current job and I'm now learning how to decorate cakes haha..something I have never done..but not sure it's for me yet.
Anyway, back to the grooming..any tips on how to learn, where to learn..any idea what kind of money groomers make? I really want to learn this.
You can email me at Rushlow2004@hotmail.com or here what ever is easier.
    Thanks guys!

I just recently saw an add on Craigslist about a person looking for someone to train for grooming. You had to commit to work there for a while, or some sort of deal, but I am sure there are more opportunities like that. I dont think the start pay would be great though.

I know someone who started at Petsmart grooming with no experience, maybe they train???

    Good luck!!

I used to groom and loved it. Have fun with it, that's the best thing to remember.

Sounds like fun till you got a grouchy dog or had to do the "back" end.

    Good luck though!!

If you get clients (like me) who are picky - watch out. The last groomer that came out here, I didn't pay them and told them I'd never use them again and would tell EVERYONE about their crappy service.

If you have the right set up, and attitude, even the grouchy ones are ok.

I used to have to do all the Chows, Shepards, and Rotties, as well as the Spaniels. Of them all, I hated the Spaniels. Their hair is wirey and will actually get under your skin. Yuk. The other ones were fine if you treated them with respect and had a firm hand. No yelling and no hitting, that was the #1 rule at our place.

I wouldn't think of hitting a dog or any animal for that matter..I'm kind of excited about it to tell ya the truth.
I'm testing waters with something else as well at work. Cake Decorating and I'm having a ball so far.

Maybe contact Rachel at Critter Country on 42, she is awesome and has a real love for our furry friends including birds, dogs, cats, ferrets, etc and has a grooming practice in the same building. i did cake decorating for a living for quite a few years but you will find more rewardment in actually doing something that helps living beings.

Hmm it worked for me just now.----

Hi, I am looking to hire a dog groomer who is trained or wants to learn to groom. I am offering to train you for *Free* which is very rare. Most of the time you pay the person training you. The only reason for this is that I can't find a good groomer. I EXPECT you to be at work on time (8-9am), ready to go, not on your cell phone, be able to come in at least 4 days each week. Overall you MUST be friendly and upbeat. As you can tell I've had many problems with groomers who either can't groom, have nasty attitudes or just don't show up to work. If you are an experienced groomer I would love to talk with you more! Our shop is located in Raleigh close to capital blvd. We pay 50% commission on baths&Brush and for Full grooms the rate is 60%. Rates for baths start at $25-125 and rates for full grooming start at $55-150. I provide everything from shampoos, electric tables, drying cages, dryers etc. You provide your own scissors and clippers. Blades are provided and sharpening services are also paid for by us. I don't care how many dogs you can do in a day - All we want is quality grooming! There are way to many high volume and chop shops around here.

If you are interested in being trained we will require you to sign a contract to stay with us for two years after training or pay us for the education. This is also to make sure that you don't learn to groom and run off and start a business with our client list. If your still interested shoot us an email with a little about yourself. Training should take 4-6 months and will be hands on. We will pay hourly until you can groom by yourself.

You can easily get a job as a groomer at PetSmart. No experience needed and it gets you in other places. (high traffic = more experience)

You will start off as a "bather". Show up to work everyday on time, dont give them any problems and they will send you off to grooming school. From there, I believe you can go up "levels" in grooming to eventually becoming a manager. You have to study to work in the grooming department but its very educational. You learn about dogs, how to handle them, what to do in an emergency, etc.

    Its a start. :)

Oh, starting pay for a bather is around $7-8 an hour...

Regular groomers can make anywhere from $10 an hour and up, plus commission. Not bad for a part time job for starters. :)

Does anyone know where the lady who ran Pet Perfection on 42 (past Lowes)moved to? She did a wonderful job grooming my schnauzer and I felt comfortable leaving him with her.

In all seriousness, you should call other people who do it and ask them whether the like it or not.

    My story:

In an effort to save money when we first moved back up here we (DH and I) TRIED to cut Matties nails :? We were terrified she was going to kill us in our sleep. We wrapped her in a comforter, I held her and DH TRIED to cut her nails. Didn't happen!!! She was growling and spitting. So we called a mobile groomer!

Love Bark and Bath - PLEASE come to Apex:mrgreen:
